EP 138 - Eastern State Penitentiary | Philadelphia, PA

  • Summary

  • Deep in the heart of the city of brotherly love.. is the Eastern State Penitentiary. Designed to strike terror into its most violent and dangerous prisoners, it's construction was heavily influenced by the Quakers. They believed that these inmates could be rehabilitated by hard work, isolation and god. They thought solitary confinement would lead these men and women to penitence, the root word of Penitentiary. But the deafening silence drove many of these prisoners to the brink of insanity, leading to riots, murders, suicides and unspeakable violent acts. Today the brooding gothic edifice is widely regarded as one of the most haunted buildings in the entire world.
