  • End of Watch Episode 25 "Infuriating Leak"
    Dec 8 2023

Episode Twenty Five - Infuriating Leak - stars Boris Herrmann from Day 8 of The Retour A La Base 2023.

Boris starts the podcast by telling all the listeners about the infuriating leak he has coming into the boat and that it is really challenging he rates his mood as a five out of ten. Please all send some love to boris in the comments on Youtube, Insta or email and we will pass these on to him.

Currently he is often having to bail out the water to ensure that the boat and most importantly the engine and electronics are dry. The engine cover leaking issue is a problem and is not fully waterproofed. Boris explains he is currently having to wear boots in the boat all the time (a rare thing on Malizia) and having to bail out the water - he is over proportionally worried about it.

He has slept and eaten but he reminds the listener and himself that he should go bail water and sleep. He says the boat does super well downwind with the rough state - no nose diving. He keeps pushing in an attempt to be faster than direct competitors - 2 days to go and a dream to be in 4th but it is still 1000nm to go.
Arrive Sunday and then go and sit in the Creperie in Lorient - Boo't a Boo - the local favourite.

He says it is great to do the race in this boat - as they did the whole ocean race and only a few things have broken now. So could be an easy fix for the future. Boris lets us know that the rest of the boat works very well.
Boris could do with a better mood and he doesn't feel lonely - fingers crossed it stays that way. He hopes the listeners are happy and enjoying listeners - he will try to do another podcast tomorrow.

He found the issue with the sleeping and that his water hydration tablets have caffeine in them - a small but costly mistake.... we always continue to learn!

  • End of Watch Episode 24 "Climate Watch"
    Dec 5 2023

Episode Twenty Four - Climate Watch - stars Boris Herrmann from Day 5 of The Retour A La Base 2023.

Boris starts by thanking the listener that suggested the ribbon tying to his bunk each sunset in order to count the days that go past (thank you to you - we passed on the message).

Then he reads a quote and asks the audience (for a prize) to submit who said the quote - if you think you know then please email the answer and your name and your address to the email below. First one wins a special prize.

Boris then talks about the Ocean Challenge programme as Birte, our ocean educator, presented to children in Hamburg yesterday with our scientist Peter Landschutzer about the role the Ocean plays in climate change. Boris also talks about COP28 and the talks that are going on at the moment in Dubai around climate action. He explains the role that many of our partners are playing at COP and the special projects we are working on with each of them. He particularly talks about the actions in the shipping industry with cleaner shipping and policy around emission reduction.

Boris then says everyone is welcome to attend a kids Ocean Challenge online event we host and that everyone can download our kids kit here in 11 languages: https://www.team-malizia.com/news/educational-material-my-ocean-challenge

Traveling on Malizia - Seaexplorer at around an average of 21 knots, Boris goes on to thank Peter Landschutzer and Toste Tanhua our ocean scientists who work with the ocean data we collect onboard our yacht whilst competing in our offshore races. This very valuable and rare data is submitted to the SOCAT database to be used by scientists around the world to better understand the role the Ocean plays in mitigating climate change. Boris explains that this data is also used in the Global Carbon Budget report, the updated version of which is released today.

Boris finishes off with talking about being in 5th place now and how he lost some distance in the night which was a bit costly but he has been able to go fast in the heavy wind throughout the day and has caught up some ground. Boris explains he stayed south for longer due to the smooth sea in the south as it helped the boat accelerate through the night. Boris also managed to get some good sleep that night and is feeling much better.

He will head north and then zigzag to the east - the cold front from the west should overtake them quite quickly and once it passes over he will be on a port tack and sailing north - ready to catch the last system heading all the way to the finish in Lorient. He is predicting a fast four days until the finish, although he is currently tackling a very tricky sea-state with short crossed messy waves, this would have him arrive on Saturday early afternoon.

Boris signs off wishing everyone in the snow in Europe the best - and to answer the quiz.

He also discusses how he hasn't fully got his sea legs and how sleeping is harder on these new boats to get comfy and also more challenging in solo mode.
Boris goes on to talk about the very light patch of wind and loosing some miles but he had to go on deck to shake a reef and in doing so discovered a rainbow.

Then he talks about his breakfast cereal and wishes everyone a happy Monday morning.

  • End of Watch Episode 21 "Rhythm of Life"
    Jun 19 2023

Episode Twenty One - Rhythm of Life - stars Rosalin Kuiper and Boris Herrmann from Leg 7 during The Ocean Race 2023.

Boris and Rosie discuss their daily routines and how their life has started to evolve over the last days.

What is your favourite podcast they ask? Boris and Rosie thank the audience for their feedback - feel free to email us with your feedback on info@borisherrmannracing.com and we will forward the best feedback to the boat.

The duo talk about how they sleep on board and what the rhythm of life is like at the moment. Boris is sleeping in the darkroom at the moment and describes what this is like.

The weather is getting warmer and they can feel that they are traveling further south into warmer climate. They have 8-11 knots of wind and that there is now a long upwind to Cap Finistre.

They have been on a port tack for three days and are hoping that the wind will at some point turn or they fear that their track will look very bad on the next updates. They continue to discuss the weather, tactics and the weather shifts. They are continually looking at the competitors ahead to understand what the weather is doing up ahead.

The duo talk about connecting to 11th hour and how they want more news from them. They then go on to talk about the rationing of food and that they are already rationing and not snacking as much. Boris talks about the Barcelona World Race with Ryan and that it took 100 days and that they had to ration the food quite dramatically as they only planned food for 100 days. They had almost no snacks anyway and they both lost a lot of weight.

They also talk about how limited they are with water and how everything on the boat is rationed. They then look at how in the first world we have so much excess and that we waste so much and should use and consume less.

  • End of Watch Episode 19 "Anything Can Happen"
    May 28 2023

Delayed podcast from day 4 of leg 5

The internet had delayed this amazing update from the team - so this is actually day 4 of the race of leg 5

Episode Nineteen - Anything Can Happen - stars Rosalin Kuiper and Boris Herrmann from Leg 5 during The Ocean Race 2023.

Listen along as Rosalin Kuiper and talk about everything from the last 4 days. Hear how hard the team found it in the first days. Trying to struggle with the cold, the waves, the dark and why they found it so hard.

They are now back in good spirits and ready to push hard.

They still don’t know they made the record and they are edging into calmer weather but still with good wind. They talk about the arrival into Aarhus and the excitement of approaching land and what they are looking forward to.

They look at the weather systems they have been experiencing and why the routing and weather tactics have carried them to where they are. They talk about the sprint over the top of Scotland and how quickly the end is already approaching.

They have been almost 90 days at sea since January and they analyse the transition from land to sea and what they struggled with. Newport was such a team and cosy feeling and that it was then much harder to leave. Both felt that the stop wasn’t long enough and so they found it hard to get back to the ocean.
