It was far and away the worst loss of the season. No. 13 Illinois rode into Saturday morning as winners of five straight and looking to keep it going against a USC team that had beat no one and is projected to finish near the bottom of the Big Ten. The Trojans had other plans as they upset Illinois 82-72 as 14.5 point underdogs. It was their first road win against a ranked opponent in their last 19 tries, dating back to 2010. WHAT A WIN over Penn State last night! Illinois demolished a solid Penn State 91-52 without Kasparas Jakucionus, who was ruled out before tip off out of nowhere. Should Illinois fans be concerned? Illinois dominated early and lead at halftime by 11 but theHuskies hung around and made a second half run to tie it in the final seconds. In by far the Illini's best game of the season, Illinois upset Oregon 109-77 behind the bench play of Jake Davis and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn in the first half and the Illini starters in the second half. Illinois struggled to score early but was able to get into the interior and dominate the rebounding game to get a lead, then the shots started falling en route to the blowout victory. The non-conference season is (basically) over. Illinois finished the non-conference season going 2-2 against the SEC with their best wins over Arkansas and Missouri. They were in every game and you can make the argument they probably should have gone 5-0 in December. Alas, the guantlet Big Ten season is here. Can they win the Big Ten?
