Incident 16 | Pat Pickens Celebrating 50 years of Hartford Whalers Hockey - Carolina Hurricanes

  • Summary

  • - 50th anniversary of the first professional hockey game in Hartford. can you give us a nice recap of the celebration in Hartford and how was it?

    - Very successful WHA team prior to the team moving to the NHL with the merger. (Started in Boston, moved to Hartford in 1974 – became the New England Whalers).

    - Ron Francis/Ulf Samuelsson/Grant Jennings traded for John Cullen/Zarley Zalapski/Jeff Parker - what were the long-term ramifications of this trade, AND were there other factors, from a player personnel standpoint, that negatively impacted the team?

    - There are still a multitude of people that want an NHL team in Hartford. In your view, could Hartford sustain an NHL team today? I've heard a multitude of reasons like Hartford was, at one time, the #1 insurance capital, but does that have an impact on that local economy?

    - 2006 – win the Stanley Cup as the Carolina Hurricanes – by that time, the Hurricanes were forging their own history. What, if anything, did that Stanley Cup mean to the Hartford community? Were there hard feelings?

    - Whalers night on Feb 27 against the Sabres - How do folks in Hartford feel today about the Whalers nights we have seasonally? Ill feelings or a sense of pride in the team, town and community?

    - How is Peter Karmanos viewed in Hartford? Did he have much choice if he saw the writing on the wall of sustainability?
