  • Knock Knock Eye: The Weirdest Eye Questions You’ve Always Wanted to Ask
    Jan 9 2025
In this episode I answer some of the most frequently asked—and occasionally bizarre—questions I get as an ophthalmologist. From whether chlamydia can spread from the eyes to the genitals, to why you should never rub your eyes too hard, I dive into everyday eye concerns with humor and expertise. Takeaways: Pink Eye vs. Conjunctivitis: Pink eye is a lay term often used for infectious conjunctivitis, but conjunctivitis encompasses a wide range of causes, including allergies, autoimmune conditions, and irritants. The Danger of Overwearing Contacts: Wearing contacts for too long can lead to microabrasions and severe dry eye, which may make it impossible to wear them comfortably in the future. Eye Rubbing Risks: Excessive eye rubbing can cause permanent corneal changes or even optic neuropathy in extreme cases. Gentle rubbing is okay, but moderation is key. Retinal Detachment in High Myopes: People with severe nearsightedness (high myopia) are at a greater risk of retinal detachment and should avoid high-impact activities or seek medical care if experiencing flashes, floaters, or a curtain over their vision. UV Light Protection for Cataracts: While cataracts are inevitable with age, wearing UV-blocking sunglasses can help slow their progression and reduce the risk of other eye conditions like macular degeneration and eyelid cancers. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! • What Is ARFID and Why Is It So Misunderstood? | Andrew (ARFID Andrew) Luber
    Jan 7 2025
In this episode we delve into the personal and challenging world of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) with guest Andrew Luber, known online as ARFID Andrew. Kristin shares her own experiences living with ARFID, including how it has shaped her relationship with food, social dynamics, and self-perception. Andrew adds his unique perspective, sharing his journey of trying new foods while documenting his struggles and triumphs on social media. Together, we all unpack the stigma surrounding ARFID, the challenges of navigating a food-centric culture, and the importance of raising awareness for this often misunderstood condition. Takeaways: ARFID is not picky eating—it’s a complex disorder that affects how individuals perceive and interact with food, often causing severe social and emotional challenges. Raising awareness for ARFID helps others understand the condition and reduces stigma for those living with it. Social pressure and safe environments can play a significant role in encouraging exposure to new foods for those with ARFID. Sharing personal stories, like Kristin’s and Andrew’s, can inspire others with ARFID to seek support and self-advocate. Humor and creativity can be powerful tools for spreading awareness and fostering understanding of ARFID. — Want to Learn About Andrew Luber: TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube: @Arfid_Andrew — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! • Knock Knock Eye: The Promise and Challenges of Bionic Eyes
    Jan 2 2025
In this episode I talk about the cutting-edge world of bionic eye technology, diving into how devices like the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis are helping patients with retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration regain rudimentary vision. Alongside this futuristic topic, I also reflect on the challenges of practicing in the ICU as a young intern and the complexities of addressing patient needs with innovative surgical techniques. Takeaways: Ophthalmology Subspecialties: Dr. Flannery provides an overview of the subspecialties within ophthalmology, from refractive and cornea surgery to retina, pediatric, and neuro-ophthalmology, highlighting their unique roles in patient care. The Power of Second Opinions: He emphasizes the importance of seeking a second opinion for high-cost treatments like LASIK or in-office dry eye therapies to make informed decisions about eye care. Foreign Bodies in Eyes: Dr. Flannery describes the tools and techniques he uses to remove foreign objects, from cat hair to rust rings, showcasing one of the more unusual aspects of his work. Sixth Nerve Palsy Case: He shares a compelling story about a young patient diagnosed with a cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, illustrating the importance of timely and accurate diagnoses in eye care. Safe Eye Drops Matter: He answers fan questions about redness-relieving drops like Lumify, advising against generics linked to dangerous Pseudomonas infections and explaining the benefits of trusted brands. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! my favorite medical (comedy) podcast!

There are a lot of medical influencers out there but Dr. Glauc is the best. Episodes are interesting and informative, with a good balance of serious and lighthearted conversations and topics. The levity and the love of medicine really shines and is so needed in this time of the moral depravity of corporate healthcare, insurance tyranny, and private equity nastiness.

I can't say enough good things about this podcast. I've been following Dr. G for a while but deleted my YouTube account, so I am glad I can continue to listen on Audible! Listening to the silly banter between Dr. G and Lady G at the beginning of the episodes is very sweet and comforting. I love the solo episodes and the ones with guests. Highly recommend 10/10!
