  • Lethal Weapon: I’m Too Old for This Shit
    Dec 23 2024

    Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are learning to live again while taking down some dirty, rotten criminals. We watched the 1987 film by Richard Donner, Lethal Weapon.

If 50-something is, as Murtaugh claims, “too old for this shit,” then what do we have to look forward to? And what does it say about us when we’re already feeling too old for a lot of shit?

I’ll say one thing: at least none of us have just been partnered up with a loose cannon with a death wish. I’m sure that’s not what Murtaugh wished for when he blew out his birthday candles.

But you know what none of us will ever too old for? Watching a fantastic ‘80s classic. And it’s a Christmas movie to boot? Santa Claus is bringing the goods for us all this year!

  • Gremlins: Never Feed Them After Midnight
    Dec 16 2024

    Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to save Christmas from those dang little monsters. We watched the 1984 film from Joe Dante, Gremlins.

There’s a man out there. Look, look he’s crawling on the…

Oh wait, that’s the wrong kind of gremlin, and we’re not in a plane. Not that the ones in this week’s film are any less creepy. These ‘80s gremlins are arguably more horrifying and destructive.

Enjoy this holiday episode. We’ve filled it with gremlins cute and terrible. And remember, don’t get them wet and don’t feed them after midnight!

  • The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero Is the True Hero
    Dec 9 2024

    Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are just trying to inject a little Christmas joy into the ruts of their lives. We watched the 1993 film from Henry Selick, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

This is Halloween, this is Halloween…

Wait, this is actually Christmas time. A small conundrum has popped up, and it’s sending us into an existential crisis. No, you’re catastrophizing! Is it Halloween? Is it Christmas? Can one thing actually be two things?

Listen on to find out just what the heck this film is. There are two things we know for certain: the songs kick butt and Oogie Boogie got what was coming to him.

  • Elf: SANTA!!!
    Dec 2 2024

    Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are leaving the North Pole and finding our family. We watched the 2003 film from Jon Favreau, Elf.

Do you ever feel like you’re different from everyone else? Maybe you don’t look like everyone else? Maybe you’ve got different interests? Maybe you’re a full-grown human being living amongst Santa’s elves?

That’s the story of Buddy the elf in a nutshell (or maybe a chestnut shell?). After ending up at Santa’s workshop as a baby, he grows up to become the biggest elf of them all. But despite his loving upbringing, he still has questions about where he came from.

To kick off this wonderful holiday month, we’re talking about a modern day classic. It brought warm, joyful smiles to our faces. We hope that this episode will do the same for you.

  • Thanksgiving: There Will Be No Leftovers!
    Nov 25 2024

    Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are just going to skip any post-Thanksgiving sales this year, thank you very much. We watched the 2023 film from Eli Roth, Thanksgiving.

It’s the sort of manic behavior exhibited by the insane shoppers at the beginning of this film that is the reason why other countries look at us and shake their heads. We’ve got to do better people!

To paraphrase an episode of Futurama, the holidays should be about bringing people together, not blowing them apart. Stay home, enjoy good food, love your family. A free waffle iron isn’t worth being brutally murdered.

Let this B-movie of the month be a warning: don’t let the holidays make you crazy. It could be the one thing that keeps a deranged murderer from getting us all.

  • Planes, Trains & Automobiles: Those Aren’t Pillows!
    Nov 18 2024

    Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are just trying to get home in time for Thanksgiving. We watched the 1987 film from John Hughes, Planes, Trains & Automobiles.

In the great arc of our lives, we should all strive to be more like John Candy and a whole lot less like Steve Martin. At least, how they are in this classic ‘80s comedy.

I get it—Steve’s character, Neal, is dealing with the worst kind of travel headache. He could sure stand to be a lot more jovial, kind, and forgiving. Does he have to lose all their money, burn down a car, and destroy a hotel room? Maybe not, but he’d be a lot less stressed.

We’re taking a wild ride from New York to Chicago with these two buffoons. This episode is more fun than selling shower rings as earrings.

  • Civil War: We Are All Dumbasses
    Nov 11 2024

    Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are really hoping that this film won’t be prophetic. We watched the 2024 film from Alex Garland, Civil War.

I imagine that slipping into fascism happens in the same way bankruptcy does. In a quote often attributed to Ernest Hemingway in his novel, The Sun Also Rises, one character asks, “How did you go bankrupt?” The other responds, “Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.”

That appears to have been the case in the U.S. that’s depicted in this film. One unfortunate election installs a lunatic as the President. For what must feel like a hellish eternity, it seems like it’s curtains for the country.

We hope with all of our beings that this never happens to us. But that takes vigilance, compassion, and a love of country that doesn’t include tearing it apart. Let this film be a stern lesson to us all.
