Music's Greatest Friendship Curtis Mayfield And Jerry Butler From Music Historian Scott G Shea

  • Summary

  • Did you know that one of the greatest musical friendships ever existed between soul icons Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler? In the 1960s, Jerry was constantly at the top of the charts as a solo artist and so was Curtis with his trio, the Impressions. But, did you know the Impressions started out as a quintet with Jerry as lead singer? Though he was only with them for less than a year, his song “For Your Precious Love” was their first big hit. In his latest article for the Strange Brew, music historian and author Scott G. Shea details their story and tells why Jerry left and how Curtis Mayfield, in turn, helped get his solo career off the ground. It coincides with Beat Goes On Records forthcoming release of a quartet of Jerry Butler late-1960s Mercury LPs.
