  • Summary

  • As a new authoritarian movement rises in American politics, stoked by one of the country’s most outrageous demagogues, there is an all-out international manhunt for an American traitor. The U.S. Army’s Nazi war crimes trials in Germany have been infiltrated by a spy -- a mole for the other side. A gruesome foreign influence operation unfolds in Washington. A blackmail plot turns deadly in the U.S. Senate. A Hail Mary scheme to stop the counting of the Electoral College votes rattles democracy’s cage. With the line between the violent ultra-right and mainstream American politics fraying beyond recognition, with the FBI always one step behind their quarry, Americans of all stripes step up to confront a seemingly unstoppable, ascendant, anti-democratic force. • Episode 1: Trip 19
    Oct 10 2022

It started with a plane crash. The tragic, mysterious crash of a commercial airliner in the summer of 1940 left a scene of devastation in rural Virginia -- and a series of unanswered questions. The cause of the crash was unclear. Among the dozens of people killed was a sitting U.S. senator. His presence on the flight and the strange circumstances surrounding the crash would end up revealing threats to American democracy itself.

A Gripping Story of Treachery That Americans Ignore At Their Peril

This historically accurate telling of the rise of Nazism inside the U.S. is better than any novel or other non-fiction book I have ever read on any subject, and I have read some excellent books and listened to excelllent presentations

This true story is so compelling that I have stayed up listening to it. I think it is so gripping because of the times we are living in. Also, it is not just a lecturer droning on about facts. Told with dramatic flare, the story is told by including the voices of announcers, historians and politicans, along with music. I rate the production value of this podcast as five.

It is shocking to realize how the same tactics are being used today with great success. I cannot wait for the next episode!

Great history lesson. I had heard about some of it but not the details that Rachel Maddow has pressented here.

Riveting

Eye opening historical comparison revealing the scary truth of how history is repeating itself in our country. It's a "don't want to listen anymore, but I have to" story. Rachel, as usual, draws the listener in with her eloquent and detailed story skills. The devil is in the details in this history I was never taught.

Fascinating Eye Opener

This should be required listening for students studying history and government. It is frightening how the events happening now are mirroring the events leading up to and following WWII. It's very hard to grasp that there are still people out there that think this way.

I adore Rachel Maddow and believe she is one of Earth's angels sent here to teach us so many lessons. She always does it with humor and the finest details that even unscholarly people like myself can understand. She knows how to tell a story that holds your interest to the very end.

I will recommend this podcast to everyone I know!

stunning roots of US politics redux

Eager for the next episode. And the next. As disappointed as I was to have Rachel shift gears beyond her daily weekday presence, it is clear her present prodigious oeuvre is bringing to light issues critically affecting current world events that otherwise would continue sub rosa.

Shocking and enlightening.

Although I am 73 years old, I had never heard of this scandal that took place in the 30s 40s and 50s. It was something people just didn’t talk about and certainly wasn’t in the history books.

The performance is exceptionally well done not just by Rachel, but with all the use of guest speakers and archival radio excerpts. The music also added to the tension and “mystery“ of the story. It is something every informed citizen should know.
