  • Sermon Jan 12 2025 "Baptism and Hydration"
    Jan 13 2025

This is the second Sunday in the New Year. It’s also the first Sunday in the Epiphany season, the church season that started with the visit of the Wise Men to the baby Jesus.

In this morning’s Gospel lesson we leave the childhood of Jesus behind and see Him as an adult. He begins the ministry He came to do by being baptized! But His baptism isn’t only about Him – it’s about us, too – what He has done for us to make us the children of God, and what those words “children of God” mean for the way we live on this earth.

  • Sermon January 5, 2025 "Following the Star"
    Jan 6 2025

This is the first Sunday in the New Year. It’s also the last day of the Christmas season. Tomorrow, January 6, is the day when the Church remembers the visit of the Wise Men to the baby Jesus.

I don’t know if you know this, but there’s lots of discussion about who these wise men were, how many there were, and on and on – but today I want to invite you to think with me about why those men and their visit all those centuries ago was so important to you and me.

  • Sermon December 29, 2024 "Jesus, redeemed and Redeemer"
    Dec 30 2024

This sermon is from the first Sunday after Christmas. This year, you might also know it as The Fifth Day of Christmas (that’s “Five Golden Rings” Day) - but in the calendar of the church, it’s the day we remember that very soon after Jesus was born his parents took Him to the temple to “present Him to the Lord.” We’ll meet two wonderful people who had been told by the Holy Spirit to go to the Temple to wait for God’s Son to show up, but we’ll focus on what it means when we realize that Jesus, who is called our Redeemer at Easter time, was Himself redeemed when He was an infant.

  • Sermon December 22 - Red Letter Advent 4 "LOVE"
    Dec 24 2024

We’re almost at the end of Red Letter Advent, where we are unboxing the four gifts of hope, peace, joy, and today, the LOVE of Jesus. So far, we’ve heard that the everyday, human understanding of each of these gifts is different than the way God uses them in His Word, the Bible. Last week, for instance, we heard that the word “JOY” is not so much an emotion word, as it is a word about our response to Him because of the gifts He gives us. Today, we’ll think about what God means when He uses the word “LOVE” - and you might be in for a surprise or two about this word, too.

So, welcome back to Red Letter Advent, and the gift of LOVE!

  • Sermon December 15, 2024 "Red Letter Advent 3 - JOY"
    Dec 17 2024

Welcome home to Red Letter Advent, where we are unboxing the four gifts of hope, peace, joy, and the love of Jesus. Last week, we heard Jesus say that the PEACE he came to give us is not like what most people think peace should be about. That’s also true of JOY – especially at this time of year!

So, welcome back to Red Letter Advent, and the gift of JOY!

People try to find peace in different ways. Some avoid bad things and hard talks to keep the peace. Others think peace comes from being powerful, as the Romans did. Some believe peace is about being perfect and following lots of rules. But Jesus gives a different kind of peace. He helped people, faced problems, and made friends, even with those who didn't like him. Jesus's peace is about love and helping others. We can have this special peace from Jesus and share it with everyone.

So, welcome to Red Letter Advent, part 2!

  • Sermon November 24 2024 "Christ the King Sunday"
    Nov 25 2024

This year most of the Gospel lessons are in the Gospel according to Saint Mark. These readings talk about Jesus’ teachings, His miracles, and His action-packed ministry. But each of the readings also has a “takeaway” from Jesus Himself! We’re focusing on these “red-letter” verses this year.

This last Sunday in the Church Year is also called “Christ the King Sunday.” This morning we’re thinking about that phrase in the Creed “He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.” So Jesus’ final red letter verse of this church year is this one- “Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.”
