    On the The Shiver Show, we usually dive into crime, horror, and science fiction, but in this episode, we're bringing you a classic tale of doomed love in the exotic city of Casablanca. Get ready to grab a tissue box—this one’s a tear-jerker!

    Released in 1942, the film Casablanca was politically charged, coinciding with the Allied invasion of North Africa. The 1943 radio episode of Casablanca was produced to support the war effort, with all the actors donating their time to the production.

    Casablanca is based on the stage play Everybody Comes to Rick’s by Murray Barnett and Joan Alison. Featuring legendary performances by Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine, Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund, and Paul Henreid as the Victor Laszlo, this story weaves love, sacrifice, and heartbreak, against the backdrop of wartime Northern Africa.

    The live audience adds a certain authenticity, complete with a few coughs and chuckles, and we hear the unforgettable song As Time Goes By, performed by Dooley Wilson as Sam.

  • The Picture of Dorian Gray

    The Picture of Dorian Gray is a 1974 episode of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater, based on the 1891 novel by Oscar Wilde. George Lowther adapted and condensed the story, which spans eighteen years, into a tight, fifty-minute episode You will hear strong performances from voice actors Nick Pryor as Dorian Gray, Norman Rose as Basil, and Roger DeKoven as the decadent Sir Henry.

    Oscar Fingal O’Fflahertie Wills Wilde (yes, there are two 'f's' in O'Fflahertie) wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray as a magazine series in 1890, and then had the story published as a novel in 1891. The themes of vanity and obsession with youth still resonate today.

    Greg and Mary talk about the retail value of souls, what inspired Wilde to write this story and what happened to Wilde after publishing the novel. For what would you sell your soul?

    Our Shiver Show episode this week is the horror classic, Dracula, from an 1949 episode on CBC Radio. This drama serves a feast of vampire lore, a creepy music score, and wonderful performances by actors Lorne Green as Count Dracula, Lister Sinclair as Van Helsing, Bud Knapp as Doctor Stewart and Naver Moore as Renfield.

    This adaptation for radio by Greg Salverson manages to remain faithful to the original novel in a tight episode of less than one hour. Bram Stoker's timeless horror novel, Dracula (1897) has inspired countless films, TV series, radio plays, stage plays, musicals, and graphic novels.

    As Bram Stoker wrote, 'When the spirit dies, but the dead live, the dark guard of the night is a beast.' Listen now!!

    Few stories have inspired film, television and radio as much as Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. This 1952 old time radio drama from the Suspense series condenses Shelley's novel into a tight thirty minute episode.

    This production has wonderful performances by the lead voice actors, Hebert Marshall and Joseph Kerns, and immersive sound effects, especially in Victor's spooky laboratory.

    Mary and Greg delve into the intriguing history behind the seminal novel by Mary Shelley, that was first penned by Shelley when she was eighteen.

    Frankenstein is considered by many to be the first science fiction novel and is often listed in the top one hundred novels of all time.

  • Sleeping Draught

    A ship, full of convicts, bound for Australia in the late 1700's, makes its way through rough seas. As supplies run low, and tensions rise, Captain Gore and first mate Finch become wary of their shackled passengers. An enterprising convict named Jonathan Abbey proposes to the captain that Abbey can disarm the convicts, but the captain must let him go free. The captain accepts, but will the plan work?
    There is much to enjoy in The Sleeping Draught, a suspense tale that first aired in 1950 on the Escape radio drama series. Mary and Greg discuss Australian convict history, the terrific sound effects and solid performances by John Dodsworth and Ben Wright.
    The Sleeping Draught will have you in suspense from beginning to end.
