  • Little Women (1994): How Tiny Are They? | Uncultured Universe Podcast Movie Review
    Dec 14 2024

"What a little name for such a person."

We're back, bitches! After a small hiatus, we return with Joe's long-time pick "Little Women" from 1994. Justin has never seen it, until now!

Somewhat appropriate for this time of year, "Little Women" is the perfect feel good/feel sad movie just in time for the Xmas season. The themes of questioning your place in the world, as well as giving the patriarchy a hearty and enthusiastic bucking, makes this movie highly relevant in today's society.

The performances are what really stand out in this flick. All of the eponymous tiny ladies are firing on all cylinders to create a truly memorable and strong film that stands the test of time. Stay tuned for a future episode where we view the 2019 version and compare notes!

We'll see you in 2025 where we'll explore more sequels, sister-films, and follow ups, as well as expanding our palette into more TV shows and music!

  • Uncultured Culture Club: Forrest Gump
    Sep 20 2024

"Life is like a box of chocolates..."

To celebrate our 50th episode (as well as the podcast's 2nd birthday) we've decided to temporarily throw out the rules and do something a little different. This episode, we look at Justin's favorite movie of all time, and Joe has also seen it: Forrest Gump from 1994!

No frills, no muss, no fuss. Just a great discussion about why the movie Forrest Gump rules. This film has it all: deep social commentary, romance, complex human emotion on display, harsh realities of war, but most importantly this movie has heart. Tom Hanks is obviously at the center of that heart, but his costars Robin Wright, Sally Field, and Gary Sinise are absolute triumphs in their roles that support and don't outshine the others.

We'll come back to our Uncultured Culture Club soon with Joe's immense and hard-to-tackle pick, the entire Lord of the Rings Extended Editions! But first, we're going to jump into October looking at a couple Winona Ryder centric films starting with a selection from Joe, 1994's "Little Women"!

  • Field of Dreams (1989)
    Sep 7 2024

"If you build it, he will come."

We go straight to the heartland of middle America with the late 80's family drama "Field of Dreams" - a Joe pick! Justin had always known the general broad sweepings of the film, but never knew deep down it was dad-centric ghost tale.

The boys discuss how the family nature is the heart of this movie, and how that's what truly give it such a lasting impact. It also goes without saying how phenomenal James Earl Jones is, being a crotchety yet solid foundation to this flick. Finally, there's discussion of just how with a few simple tweaks to the script, this movie could've easily been turned into a psychological horror.

BIG NEWS! So we're approaching our 50th episode of Uncultured Universe, which is both insane and incredible. To celebrate, we'll be looking at a couple of our favorite films together, regardless if the other has seen it before or not, because fuck it! To start we'll be going with Justin's absolute favorite film of all time - "Forrest Gump," starring Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, and Gary Sinise!

  • Varsity Blues (1999)
    Aug 18 2024

    "I don't want your life."

Are y'all ready for some good ol' sports film talkin'? Then strap on your helmet and get out there, coach is countin' on you!

We take a look at some influential, beloved (as well as heavily parodied) sports classic, starting with Justin's pick: "Varsity Blues" from 1999.

The boys discuss the seemingly innocuous and innocent plot to dive deeper into the deeper and darker implications of this movie. The adults of the town? Has-beens and drunk who are stuck in the past. The coach? A sadistic sociopath who has probably killed before. And of course, these here good ol' boys just run rampant through the town of West Canaan with impunity. A lively discussion ensues.

Come back later in August for Joe's sports pick, all about the Kevin Costner-driven classic: "Field of Dreams"!

  • Miss Congeniality (2000)
    Aug 2 2024

"You think I'm gorgeous, you want to kiss me..."

We put the cuffs on our Crime Corner July series and throw away the key with our episode all about 2000's "Miss Congeniality"!

Sandy B. is on fire in this one, anyone could attest to that. Accompanying her are heavy hitters like Candice Bergen, William Shatner, and of course the effervescent Michael Caine bring a level of panache. And lest we forget, a stunningly hot Benjamin Bratt rounds out the cast with his smarminess.

A classic early 2000's comedy, this one pulls all the right strings in balancing comedy and action, while bringing a little bit of that down-home goodness that only Sandra Bullock can bring to the table. But of course, it goes without saying this movie's blatant sexism and objectification of women is on full display and is a product of its time.

Despite the flaws, this movie is enjoyable mostly in part to the dynamic and fun cast. This movie also holds a special place in Joe's heart for a number of awe-worthy reasons!

Stay tuned for our next series where we explore sports movies, literally kicking off with a Justin pick: "Varsity Blues"!

  • Super Troopers (2002)
    Jul 15 2024

    "Mother of God."

Expecting 1987's "Robocop?" Well guess again, muchachos. We're hitting the highway with the comedy cult classic from 2002, Broken Lizard's "Super Troopers."

A deeply nostalgic cut from Justin's teenage years that surprisingly (but also not so surprisingly) did not hit the mark with Joe. Call it differing tastes, or simply chalk it up to a movie comedy that's nearing 20 years old showing its age. Irregardless, this movie still slaps and hits for the most part, with its deceivingly straightforward plot, but heavily peppered in with some classic early-2000's raunch and physical comedy.

Following up our Crime Corner July, faux law enforcement mini series will be the 2000 action comedy starring Uncultured Universe fav Sandra Bullock, "Miss Congeniality!"

  • Superstar (1999)
    Jul 1 2024

"Go drink a bottle of yourself."

Rounding out the SNL mini series with the late 90's Catholic school "teen" comedy, "Superstar," starring Molly Shannon as the zany yet earnest Mary Katherine Gallagher.

Again, the SNL studios crew managed to extrapolate and bring a small screen character and world to life with this movie, and with classic 90's gusto. Justin and Joe discuss the unique comedy of Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell, the wonderfully villainous nature of Elaine Hendrix's Evian, and this movie's insane one-liners ("Mary Magdelicious!")

Join us in July where we take an interesting turn towards two cop movies that could not be any more different, starting with 1987's "Robocop."

  • Waynes World (1992)
    Jun 10 2024

    ""Party time. Excellent."

We're back on our movie bullshit, coming at you with the early 90's grunge-slacker-comedy classic "Wayne's World" - schwing!

During the month of June, we'll be taking a look at movies that are based on Saturday Night Live sketches. This one of course takes the cake as the highest grossing film based on an SNL skit, and obviously it makes sense. This movie is full of great gags, memorable quotes, and a brand of comedy Joe & Justin clock as "innocently Canadian."

Be sure to come back later this month for the Joe pick, "Superstar" starring Molly Shannon & Will Ferrell!
