Tension is at an all time high and the Jews and Pharisees want him dead. He’s basically public enemy #1.The Last Supper – Jesus shares a final meal with his disciples, instituting the practice of communion (Luke 22:19-20).Betrayal and Arrest – Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, leading to his arrest (Matthew 26:47-56)Trials and Sentencing – Jesus is tried before the Jewish Sanhedrin, then taken to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who ultimately orders his crucifixion (John 18:28-40).The Crucifixion – Jesus is scourged, nailed to a cross, and dies after several hours (Mark 15:25-37).The Burial – Joseph of Arimathea, a secret follower of Jesus, buries his body in a tomb (Luke 23:50-56).The Resurrection – On the third day, the tomb is found empty, and Jesus appears to his followers (Matthew 28:1-10, John 20:11-18).While the core events remain the same, each Gospel provides variations in details, reflecting different perspectives and theological emphases.Crucifixion in Roman Culture1. Purpose and UseCrucifixion was reserved for the worst criminals, slaves, traitors, and rebels—those deemed threats to Roman authority. It was not used for Roman citizens, as it was considered too shameful and cruel for them. The goal was not just execution but public humiliation, ensuring that others feared opposing the empire.2. The Process of CrucifixionA. Scourging (Flogging) Before CrucifixionVictims were subjected to brutal flogging using a flagrum—leather cords embedded with bone or metal.Flesh was torn, muscles exposed, causing extreme blood loss and shock. Many victims died from the flogging alone.B. Carrying the CrossThe condemned carried the patibulum (horizontal beam, 75–125 lbs). This exhausted and humiliated the victim.C. The Crucifixion ProcessVictims were nailed (typically through wrists and feet) or tied to the cross. They were then lifted onto the vertical post.Death usually occurred by asphyxiation due to hanging.Breaking of Legs (Crurifragium): Hastened death by preventing the victim from pushing up to breathe.Spear to the Side: Confirmed death (John 19:34).Jesus and Crucifixion Practices:Jesus was scourged (Matthew 27:26).He carried the cross. His side was pierced.Legs were not broken. The Prophecies Fulfilled by JesusThe Old Testament contains numerous prophecies that Christians believe were fulfilled by Jesus' death and resurrection. These prophecies were written centuries before his birth, and their fulfillment is a cornerstone of Christian theology.Key Prophecies and Their Fulfillment:The Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53: 1-12)Verses 1-3: "Why have you forsaken me?" (10 minutes)PRAYERPART 2: JESUS’S FORGIVENESS IN HIS DARKEST MOMENTBetrayed. Denied. Rejected. Forsaken. Yet, He Forgave.Betrayed by a friend – Judas, one of His twelve disciples, sold Him for 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16).Denied by Peter – One of His closest followers, Peter, denied Him three times when He needed him most (Luke 22:54-62).Rejected by His own people – The Jewish leaders and many in the community who once welcomed Him as the Messiah turned on Him.They accused Him of blasphemy for claiming to be the Son of God (John 10:33).The same crowd that shouted "Hosanna" as He entered Jerusalem later cried out, “Crucify Him!” (Matthew 27:22-23).Instead of accepting the truth, they chose Barabbas, a known criminal, over Jesus (Matthew 27:15-26).Forsaken by God – At His lowest moment, Jesus cried out:“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).This was the fulfillment of Psalm 22, prophesying the Messiah’s suffering.Yet even as He hung there, tortured and abandoned, His response was:“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34).If Jesus could forgive in that moment, how can we hold onto unforgiveness in ours?PART 3: THE COMMAND TO FORGIVEForgiveness = ObedienceColossians 3:13 – "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Matthew 6:14-15 – Jesus says that if we don’t forgive others, God won’t forgive us.Releasing the Offender = Freeing YourselfForgiveness does NOT mean excusing sin.It means giving up the right to seek revenge. It means releasing the offender from the debtIt’s not about fairness—it’s about faith."Forgiveness is for our benefit – it frees us. As Hebrews 12:15 reminds us, 'See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.' Holding onto bitterness only harms us, but when we choose to forgive, we release the burden and walk in God's grace."Forgiveness isn’t saying what they did was okay. It’s saying YOU won’t let it control you anymore.PART 4: GOD'S RADICAL FORGIVENESSBiblical Stories of God Forgiving at Our LowestPeter’s Denial → Jesus’ Restoration (John 21:15-19)Peter abandoned Jesus, yet Jesus met him with love, not condemnation.“Feed my sheep.” Jesus didn’t shame him—He gave him purpose. The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)A son wastes his father’s wealth in sin but is welcomed home with open arms.God isn’t waiting to punish us—He’s waiting to embrace us.David’s Sin (2 Samuel 11-12, Psalm 51)Adultery, murder, deception… yet when David repented, God forgave him. “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” (Psalm 51:10)Closing Thoughts (5 minutes)A Final Challenge: Who do you need to forgive today? Not because they deserve it, but because you deserve peace. Not because they’ve earned it, but because Jesus forgave you freely.Reminders:Like, subscribe, and share this podcast with someone who needs encouragement.Email us at theunreligiouspodcast@gmail.com with questions or topic suggestions.Check out our YouTube channel for more content!Thank You Message:Thank you for joining us for this episode of The Unreligious Podcast. Holding onto bitterness or anger can weigh you down mentally, emotionally, and physically. It does not mean excusing the wrongdoing or forgetting the pain—it means choosing to free yourself from the burden of past hurts.BIBLICAL MEANING OF FORGIVENESSIn Matthew 18:15-17 NKJV, Jesus instructs that if a brother sins against you, you should first go and tell him his fault between the two of you alone. If he listens, you have gained your brother; if not, take one or two others with you, and if he refuses to listen to the church, treat him as a pagan or a tax collector.Forgiveness = Letting go of sinIn the Bible, forgiveness is about releasing others from their debts against us, just as God released us through Christ.Romans 8:1 – "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."Why Is It So Hard to Forgive?Fear of being hurt again.Fear of looking weak.Fear of them not facing justice. It feels like we’re letting them off the hook.Romans 12: 14-2114 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have[e] regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. But, what if unforgiveness is actually keeping you on the hook? What Happens When You Hold a Grudge? (Science & Health Effects)Increases stress hormones (cortisol), leading to anxiety, depression, and even weight gain.Higher risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.Weakened immune system, making you more prone to illness.Poor sleep, digestive issues, and chronic pain.Bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. What Forgiveness Does for Your Body & MindLowers stress and improves mental clarity.Releases dopamine and serotonin, boosting happiness.Strengthens your heart and immune system.Leads to longer life expectancy. The Bible confirms this truth:Proverbs 17:22 – “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”Isaiah 26:3 – “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Matthew 18:21-35The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ 27 Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.28 “But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down [a]at his feet and begged ...
