Volunteering in Germany: Helping people at the Central Station in Cologne

  • Summary

  • Getting in touch with various people and always learning new things. That's exactly his thing! As a weltwärts volunteer at the Cologne Bahnhofsmission (train station mission), Ken supports the team in their daily activities at Cologne Central Station. Mathias met him live in Cologne, visited his placement, and accompanied him to the Rhine - Ken's favourite place. Here, he likes to reflect and engage in conversations with people. In the podcast he talks about his perceptions of Germany, the different food, the role of language, and why it takes a bit longer to make friends in Germany. And here's another fact: Ken is also the 4,000th South-North volunteer since the inception of the weltwärts programme! About Ken Ken is 25 years old and from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Since May 2023, he has been undertaking his weltwärts voluntary service with the organisation IN VIA at the Cologne Bahnhofsmission (train station mission). The Bahnhofsmission is a point of contact for all people at the station who need help. Before weltwärts, Ken worked as a tour guide in Uganda and was also involved in an organization that cares for street children. After his volunteer service, he wants to stay involved and is exploring the idea of founding his own organization. www.weltwaerts.de; www.engagement-global.de; www.bmz.de; www.invia-koeln.de; www.bahnhofsmission-koeln.de
