Publisher's summary

Before the apocalypse they were strangers. Now their lives will forever be entwined.

Everyone is going to die. Soon. The whole of humanity sits on the precipice of total annihilation by plague. That’s some heavy shit right there.

If 99 percent of the population dies, that leaves one percent grieving, scared, desperate, capable of anything, plunged into an apocalypse without laws, and no one to enforce them anyway, where there are no rules but one: might makes right.

Two strangers. When Frankie loses the love of her life, she's ripped apart by grief but finds unknown strengths inside herself. Yorke will stop at nothing to keep her safe. Together, they will prove love is stronger than any apocalypse.

A seductive, breathtaking story that blends romance, adventure, and hope into an unforgettable listen.

This is the first book in an ongoing series, rated R for sexuality, violence, and language.

Love this series.

The whole After the Plague series is wonderful. I love the characters and seeing their beginnings here even though there’s lots of heartbreak in this one. Narrators were good. Only thing I didn’t love was having intro and outro music for each chapter.

Good book but short.

I like the book. It was short but I know there are others. My only complaint was the music in between chapters. Super annoying. Almost stop the book because of it. Just food for thought.

Heartbreaking and Riveting

This story is incredible. I've never cried so hard so fast. It's short but so packed full of emotion. And it's stuck with me even when I'm not listening. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the series as well! The narrators are amazing and they really bring the story to life! The female narrator is the author herself and she's great. The duet narration flows well too.

I'm glad I'm listening to this after our own plague situation has gotten better. It might have hit too close to home last year. Although my country was never affected as badly as some places. This story provides a terrifying look into how much worse it could have gotten.

Frankie and Yorke

This story touched something in me, maybe it's because, like Frankie, I'm a widow, losing the person who completes you is never easy and the author managed to capture the loss beautifully. This book is an emotional rollercoaster, it may be short but it evoked so many feelings and caused me to cry ugly tears and yet I had to keep listening.

The plotline will strike a chord with lots of people because it's about a virus that affects the whole planet, listening to it now when to a much lesser degree we are still in a similar situation you realise just how well done the author's plot was. I liked the backstory the author gave us for each of the main characters, Frankie a little more than Yorke, but by the time I'd listened to them, I felt like I knew them and could really relate to them.

At first, Frankie comes across as a helpless female but the more things she has to deal with the more she realizes that she's stronger than she thought. She has to be as the virus escalates and so many people are dead or dying. Jimmy the love of her life didn't make it but it seems that Frankie is immune to the virus but the pain and loss Frankie goes through after Jimmy's death was palpable and powerfully portrayed, it felt real as if I was going through my own loss again as Frankie struggled with knowing that she has to go on living in a world without Jimmy. She finds Auden a 5-year-old boy whose parents have died which temporarily gives her a reason to live but it's only temporary.....

Yorke, the main hero, if that's the right word is a US serviceman who has returned home to the US to spend his last days with his family and loved ones, well that's the idea but he's had no contact with his family for some time although he does try to get in touch with his brother once his plane lands. We weren't given as much background information on Yorke but he's a character I want to know more about.

In this first book, Yorke and Frankie don't meet but I'd like to be a fly on the wall when they do. The author did a great job highlighting the fears encountered in a post-apocalyptic world, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I had chills down my spine a few times, I've already said it's an emotional rollercoaster and it is so be prepared, have some tissues handy.
The ending is abrupt, but it's not a standalone story which I knew before I started listening I was, however, left looking forward to the next instalment in this series.

I feel I have to mention the narration by William Trevino it was very well done and made it possible for me to continue with the story when tears would have stopped me from reading.

I was given this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing my review.

Enjoyed for what it was

As mentioned in other reviews it was short and left a cliffhanger. It was good and left me wanting more, I may get the next story in the printer version.

Great story, great performance

For a full review, please see my posts on Amazon or Goodreads. I read this book (and the others available in the series) several times. So when I heard it was being released as an audiobook, I had to buy it and get my fix in this medium as well. I wasn't disappointed. The author reads the female lead herself and she does a fantastic job. She has a man perform the male parts, which I love. I much prefer that than when one person attempts all the voices, especially when there are mainly two main leads, male and female.

Do yourself a favor and buy this audiobook. It's a perfect intro to the series and to this author’s excellent novels.

Open ended

I took me awhile to get into this. I have pet peeve about a lot of angst. A lot of whining annoys me. That said it got a lot better and I can't wait to see what happens next.
I love the male/female voices point of views. The narrators also bring the story to life.
For those that want to know if I'd listen again, yes I would.
This audio book was given to me for free at my request from the publisher or author or narrator and I provided this unbiased voluntary review.

it's 1/3 of a full novel

the writing is strong, narrator does a great job, but it's 1/3 of a novel. I hate when authors do this, just to milk more money from their readers. it's hard because this is a good story but ugh not a complete story.
