About this listen

Ten years ago David Worral had plans to go to college and the potential for a beautiful future in front of him. One tragic accident later, he fled to California and reinvented himself as Dex, top porn model of Johnnies.

Dex's life is a tangled mess now, but the guys he works with only see the man who makes them believe even porn stars can lead normal lives. When Kane, one of Dex's coworkers, gets kicked out of his house, the least Dex can do is give him a place to stay. Kane may be a hyperactive muscle-bound psycho, but he's also a really nice guy. What could be the harm?

Except nothing is simple - not sex, not love, and not the goofy kid with the big dick and bigger heart who moves his life into Dex's guest room. When they start negotiating fractured pasts and broken friends, Dex wonders if Kane's honest nature can untangle the sadness that stalled his once - promising future. With Kane by his side, Dex just might be able to reclaim the boy he once was - and if he can do that, he can give Kane the home and the family he deserves.

Another Amy lane winner.

I'm truly growing to love Amy lanes books. She is still a fairly new author to me. But I just loved these two characters together. They really have such an unique relationship.

More of Johnnies boys falling in love.

This story is the 2nd story Amy wrote about the boys from Johnnies. Dex's story starts long before you meet him in Chase in Shadow, giving us his back ground, but it quickly becomes concurrent to Chase and Tommy's timeline. While the title states Dex, the story is about both Dex and Kane falling in love and making it work. You will love Kane's innocence and Dex's strength. Families are what we make them - and Amy makes them amazing!

Amy Lane and Sean Crisden do it again!

I love the way Amy Lane makes her characters so real and loveable even when they obviously have flaws. But she always manages to teach us that we all need love and acceptance.
I have listened to this book several times and am moved each time!

Wonderfully narrated by Sean Crisden

Any additional comments?

This is wonderfully narrated by Sean Crisden! I enjoyed the character voices, the pacing, the intimate scenes, as well as most of the story. Which is great, because I was really looking forward to David/Dex's story, and getting to see him fall in love with Carlos/Kane was a treat.

David "Dex" Worral has been working for Johnnies for nine years and has become the right hand man who keeps everything afloat. It's Dex who schedules and handles most of the business. While his professional life is right on track, and it's true he's doing really well, it seems like the only thing missing from Dex's life is someone to love who loves him back.

As it happens in romances, a character sometimes has to be with someone not worthy in order to see the guy who is worthy. After breaking up with his douche-nozzle ex, the "right" guy finally comes along and when Carlos "Kane" Ramirez shows up on Dex's doorstep needing a place to stay, it turns into more between the two quickly, and they fall in love. It was a really sweet thing to witness the two bond and be there for each other through thick and thin. I love these two characters!

The only negative for me was I felt like much of the last quarter was unnecessarily over-dramatic. It put me off the flow of the story and jarred me. I really didn't see the need and it felt like a sort of "Oh, things are going too well for the characters, I have to throw some angst in here!" and then a whole bunch of things happen that didn't feel organic to the story.

Bottom line: I enjoyed the story, the characters, and especially the narration. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking for a romance with a medium-level of angst, sweetness, hot sexy times, and likable characters.

Recommended.

One of my all time favorite Amy stories

This was one of my very first Amy Lane books – maybe the very first – I forget. But it’s still one of my all time favorite books of hers and of the genre.

In book two we see Dex fighting his own battles. He has had exactly one male lover and is not – yet- convinced he’s gay. He has many luke-warm girlfriends and one of them convinces him to give gay for pay porn a shot. So he does. And it’s like he’s finally able to be himself. He. Loves. It. And he’s good at it.

We are now several years down the line and he’s moved to the production side of things. He’s just dumped his lover because he’s tired of being the booty call on the side when he has feelings involved.
Kane is a simple guy with a big – piece of equipment. He likes girls but can deal with the “boy action” if that’s what it takes to give him some control of his life. He’s never been one for school and when his sister’s daughter needs chemo, he steps up to the bat doing the gay for pay thing to help pay the hospital bills.

Dex and Kane end up as roommates when Kane’s sister throws him out of his own house (yeah, it never makes a lot of sense) and Dex needs a shoulder to cry on after dumping the crappy lover.

Because – you know – their profession and all – they give each other comfort in a physical way and suddenly a moment of support has kind of turned into a “thing”.

For Kane – who never really questions things too deeply – the “thing” is comfortable and nice and he wants to keep it. But he doesn’t really do “labels” and he doesn’t really identify as “gay” so how can Dex be his boyfriend?

Dex has been down this road before and can’t do it anymore. When Kane ends up inadvertently flirting with a girl at a holiday party and messing things up more by not understanding why that’s a bad thing in Dex’s world – Dex puts down an ultimatum.

Luckily – Kane finally figures out that “anything that keeps him and Dex in the same bed is a good thing” and he fights for that tooth and nail.

**

This book has it’s fair share of angst. Right off the bat – first chapter, Dex’s lover is killed. OH MAN. That hurt. Lola, the sister, is a super-bitch and keeps Kane from his niece because he’s “dirty”. The ex-lover tries to screw things up as does Johnnie himself. Finally, Dex’s family has to make things really ugly but in the end all the tragedies serve to make Kane and Dex more tightly drawn together.

What I love about this book and what keeps me coming back to it again and again is the love. It’s so clear that these two are made for each other. The feels in this book are tremendous without feeling out of place for two men.

I love that both are sometimes “toppy” and that both lean on the other at one point or another.

The secondary characters are as rich as the MCs and the storyline about the niece and Johnnie and the receptionist… so wonderful without distracting from the main love story.

The sex is scorching hot and the emotions wonderful. I can’t say enough great things about this book!

Audio:
Sean Crisden – narrating God that he is – does an exceptional job with this. I LOVE his Kane. He’s wonderful. My favorite scene is the “I’m not a booty call” scene. He does the emotion so perfectly! He even manages to give all of Dex’s family their own unique voices – including the women!

Again, I can’t recommend this enough. It’s absolutely best if read in the series but can totally stand on its own without any problem whatsoever.

Two of the most wholesome gay porn stars ever

Where does Dex in Blue rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This material works really well as an audio-book. I will certainly listen to it again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kane won my heart. Kane has convinced himself that he's dumb and only has his gym perfect body to offer. But Kane really is wise and has an intuitive side to his nature that's a perfect foil for Dex's care-taking ways. Together they're perfect.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

At ten and a half hours this is NOT a one sitting book but it was certainly enjoyable in larger than usual segments.

Any additional comments?

David Worral's first love Dex died tragically in a collision with a deer in Montana shortly after David and Dex took their first timid steps out of the closet together. In his grief, the true nature of which he cannot admit to his family and perhaps even to himself, David spends the next 9 years in a self imposed exile to California where he has stumbled into gay-for-pay porn using Dex as his screen name. He's even become the guy Friday of the office and the one that everyone else depends on.

Now in his late twenties, Dex meets big vulnerable Kane, a young Hispanic guy from a working class Mexican family with a manipulative sister who condemns him for his porn work but gladly takes the money that it generates. Never a great student, Kane has convinced himself that he's dumb and only has his gym perfect body to offer. But Kane really is wise and has an intuitive side to his nature that's a perfect foil for Dex's care-taking ways. Together the two are a perfect match.

This installment is much lighter in tone than Chase in Shadow The characters are captivating. Plus, it's fun to revisit (even peripherally) the characters from the earlier book.

Amy Lane has succeeded in creating possibly the most wholesome porn stars ever, and it's a pleasure to spend time with them.

Sean Crisden narrates the audio-book and does a great job differentiating the large cast of male voices, the stolidity of Dex and the childlike sweetness and vulnerability of Kane shine though. Even the women's voices are convincing without being grating as is so often the case.

By all means check this one out. It's already been added to favorite re-listening shelf.

A well-told, heart-warming story from the get-go

The story is about a young gay man who comes to understand who is he and what it will take to get out of life what he wants and deserves. It is not a heavy or deep story, but accurate and meaningful in terms of the feelings and growth involved. You will come to love both the main characters as well as the background ones, who each have their own book in the series.

My only criticism is the reader. His voice seems more mature than the characters' ages are supposed to be. At times he adopts a childish lilt/tone to account for that or differentiate between different character's voices. Also, one of the main characters has an LA Mexican way of talking that the narrator can't quite pull off (mainly to the aforementioned childish lilt, which makes the character sound like a whiny child). I did, however, get used to his voice and found that it didn't detract so much as it left me just wishing it were different/better.

This is the first book in this series that I listened to. I don't know if it's the first in the series or not, but it was not a problem coming on board with this one. For those who wish to know, there are explicitly written sex scenes and I found them well-done, grounded in the story-characters (not gratuitous) and exciting.

Dex + Kane

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to anyone who loves a beautiful and sexy romance. It makes me laugh, cry, and feel real emotions for every single character.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dex in Blue?

I love the moment Carlos/Kane figures out (just in time) that he and David/Dex are really a couple and he wants it to stay that way, whatever it takes. Every time I hear that scene, I feel the weight lift off my shoulders.

Have you listened to any of Sean Crisden’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I love listening to Sean Crisden. He always does a great job, and this is one of his best performances, in my opinion.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to audiobooks during my commute, so I make myself stop when I arrive at my destination. With this book, I'll admit that there were instances when I drove around the block a few times before going home so that I could listen to just a little more!

Any additional comments?

This is one of the best books ever written and performed. I love it and will never stop coming back to it when I want to feel true love.

Main characters of the series

I took the advice of another reader and listened to this book first and I’m glad I did. I definitely feel like Dex & Kane are the main characters of the series and all the other stories revolve around them and their story.
