Publisher's summary

Plunged into an ancient portal, Hunter finds himself in a world where mankind has been all but destroyed by the dark magic of the forest surrounding Tykus, the last remaining human settlement. Magic that threatens to transform mankind into horrifying monsters.

But when Hunter discovers that he possesses the power to absorb the skills and traits of the people around him - and to transfer his skills and traits to others - Hunter becomes the hunted. For the immortal King Tykus will stop at nothing to destroy him...or to brainwash him into becoming the kingdom’s ultimate weapon.

Fleeing the kingdom, Hunter meets a woman with the same terrible power...an exiled master swordswoman named Vi. A wise-cracking, butt-kicking, badass warrior, she has one rule: keep up with her...or die.

Now Hunter must survive Vi's brutal training regimen to become a master swordsman. If he succeeds, he'll have a chance at fighting back against the all-powerful King Tykus. If he fails, his enemies will surely kill him. That is, if Vi doesn't do it first!

Experience an epic fantasy series with a world unlike any other, filled with action, adventure, immortal kings, sprawling kingdoms built with the bones of the dead, ancient artifacts of enormous power, political intrigue, betrayal, love, loss, and so much more!

A well spent gamble

In my opinion the series has a sort of rocky start. Once you get past it the story is intriguing with a “magic” that is even more so. The sex scenes are always awkward for me but don’t ruin the story. Overall one of my favorite gamble purchases.

there are no reviews yet so I will start

I'm going to leave a detailed review on this book since there are none as of yet and I will do it in sections. WARNING! THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. chapters 1-9
Hunter is a 16-17 year old junior in highschool. at the aga of 6-7 he lost his mother after she and a "student" (I think she was a college professor, it's not specifically stated) got sucked into a portal gate to another world while cave diving for "work". Hunter is apparently half black and half white (this has been mentioned several times so far because for some reason race is a big deal in this book) Hunter and his dad who has utterly gone off the deep end get into an argument after hunter learns his mom got sucked into a portal (his dad told him she died in an accident while cave diving) and he heads straight there to the cave to rescue her. he gets there and pittles around a few days until he meets some nice chaps and becomes a novice "Seeker". will update more later but it's slow going as of now
***Update chapters 10-13
race is important because apparently everything in the world is contagious. for example if a person spends to much time riding a horse they will begin taking on traits of the horse they are riding. from looks to senses. same with people. and that's why everyone in the world look mostly alike. emotions, skills, and feelings are soaked up by hard surfaces like stone, and jewels. Hunter so far is weak and easily manipulated. apparently everyone exept his friends keeps their distance from him and do not want to be near him because they do not want to be brown. even after a good explanation from his "mentor" within the seeker guild for why this is, he still feels everyone is a racist white nationalist. this narrow minded thinking seems to be a pattern of his up to this point. I still haven't seen a glimpse of potential yet but I'm hoping it appears soon. i will update soon thanks
CHAPTERS 13-end
all I can say is Clayton Wood you a one sadistic sob. holy mf shite you got me good. I ended up loving the book and I will be purchasing the next one because I have to know what will happen next but I really hope Hunter grows a damn spine and stops his whining. (I hate whinny mcs and usually return the book at the first sign of one but this book hooked me)

Surprisingly good series

It was a little of a gamble when I started this series, there is nothing that annoys me as much as a letdown in the end of a long read and there were few written reviews. This series does not let you down, it´s actually really really good.

Except a few stilted, not-flowing-very-good dialouges and scenes there are just good, exciting and sometimes quite funny reading. Mr. Wood is quite a harsh writer and turn the plot quite hard. The bad guy turns into the good guy, killing side characters brutally, some quite explicit sex here and there and some really hard banter between characters. The story is moved forward all the time and not much fluff in there, so the feeling is that you get much book-time for your credit.

I highly recommend the books and to see past the pretty cliché and cringy start, it gets much much better later.

Stupid MC

The MC makes THE SAME MISTAKES throughout the entire book! I’ll pick up the next one to see if he learned anything but as of right now it’s disappointing and frustrating to see the MC fumbling through simple situations.

Slow paced and kind of boring

I’m 1/2 way through the book and waiting for it pick up. There are some interesting aspects but overall this book just isn’t delivering. The main character is a whiny toddler who has a chip on his shoulder the size of the moon. Waiting for his power to present itself is a test of the reader’s patience, so far he is just a sort of human mood ring who absorbs and reflects feelings

The premise was good but did not deliver

Slow difficult to listen through, I kept waiting for the protagonist to be something more but he never did. Also had a lot of unnecessary sex and the violence was too graphic for my taste.

I'm smirking as I write this

Someone give the author a dictionary. The author couldn't think of any other word than "smirk". "A whole lot of smirking going on in this book", I said as I grimaced.

The premise is lame and doesn't make sense. You absorb peoples' personalities if you don't have a strong will? Boring. I'm not going to waste more money and time with this series.

Also the narrator had problems pronouncing gesture, gesturing, gestures.
