About this listen

A nude man invades Luca Suarez's home and protects him from creatures who cannot exist. Creatures hunting him.

The stranger can't tell Luca why. He can't even tell Luca his name. He remembers nothing until the moment he sees Luca. The only hint Luca has to the stranger's identity is a tattoo on his wrist: "N o X".

Nox doesn't know who he is, but he's sure of three things, his memory loss is temporary, the monsters chasing Luca are called Anubis, and his Alpha, Koda, sent Nox to protect him. There's just one problem.... Koda is Luca's brother who was murdered five years ago.

With each passing hour, Nox fills in the pieces painting an impossible truth. And with each passing hour, both men find themselves inexplicably attracted to each other. Something Luca is willing to embrace because he has nothing left to lose. And one Nox can't let happen because it could get Luca killed.

Contains mature themes.

This Author and This Narrator? Perfect combo.

I loved the Bound Gods series, so when I saw this I knew it had to be good. Kirt Graves is the icing on top. Looking forward to Anubis and I dearly hope it will be in Audio format.

5+ hrs in...

Based on some reviews:

I love sup nat, sci fi, and complex relationships, so I'm obsessed so far.

But it requires your *full attention* to thoroughly enjoy it, IMO, as there are A LOT of -- barely there -- but must-know details throughout.

For instance, setting aside the amount of sex, the "requirement" for it is fully explained by Dr. Reese Dante, about 1.5ish hrs in. However if you miss even a few words of his blurb, it might sound like more science-y-jargon.

It is rare for me to sit down and just audio-read, but this book is so complex you can't do much more than laundry or fill the dishwasher...LOL.

I've started dozens of books of this sub genre that I DNF, but this one had me from the start.

I hope this helps.

More then just another shifter story

Without spoiling too much all i have to say is that it is different then your average M/M shifter romance. i have been looking for something different and this was it. I love the nuances and details the author adds to shifter formula making it almost something totally different. The world the author creates isn't totally outlandish it sorta works in a science-fantasy kinda way. All the characters are great, The only thing that annoys me is how main character that wind up these situation always end up in a state of total disbelief. its like they never even heard of "werewolves". No one even connects the similarities until much later on in the story. I guess the author really wants to separate his world from all the other shifter novel and if the characters were so clever the book would be shorter and less entertaining but i just roll my eyes how obvious somethings are. By the end there are some loose ends but overall it was very satisfying but i'm hoping there would be more.

Kirt Graves is one of my all time favorite narrators, I absolutely love his voice range, it doesn't matter if the character is male or female he give them a distinct personality and flair.

That being said lets get to real reason why we listen to these book! animalistic love-making doesn't being to describe it! the world the author created was very solid and the story would have been great without the excessive lovemaking but who are we kidding!

Porn meets a physics textbook

I will start by saying that I enjoyed much of this story and I did finish it. Despite my next comments, I'd recommend it, especially the audio version as Kirt Graves brings the novel to life. He is talented and has not only a good range of voices but great pacing, depending on what's happening.

There were things I loved about the novel and things I really didn't. I won't give spoilers.

The good:

This is a very original take on shifters. There are elements from multiple genres woven seamlessly together into something I wouldn't have considered. It's refreshing to listen to/read something that isn't just trope. The characters were fleshed out and I sympathized with many of them. It resolves satisfactorily, which for me is always a worry. I feel like reality is full of doom and gloom; I need my happy ending!

The bad:

While this book was long (something like 15 hours or so), I felt like it could have been cut down without losing anything. I am totally fine with gay sex, why would I be in this section otherwise, but it was like a free-for-all with it. There were many scenes with Koda and the gang, and then Nox and Luka basically were like rabbits throughout the book. It became absurd. I know Ms. Wilder tried to tie all the fornicating (that's really what much of it was) into their need to "connect" with their alpha, but seriously.

The other major issue for me was that there were times where the story got bogged down in technical details that completely lost me and threw me out of the flow. I do appreciate that the author wanted to justify her theory on this new breed, but it was way too scientific for an audiobook. I even rewound through some parts, but nope. Had no idea what was going on in places. Don't know if it's different in written format but I suspect it's still too dense.

I would actually love to have a sequel. The book ends wrapping up several storylines, yet drops kind of a bomb on us at the end. Hopefully Kirt Graves can narrate again. Give this a try, you can always return it. I'll probably let it sit for a few months and then listen to it again.

One of the best books I've listened to this year!!

This book had great character development that made you get the full connection between Luca, Nox. The multiple POV's added to the uniqueness of the story. I think that is what I loved the most because so many books have similar story lines, they can get redundant. So, when I find one that really stands out I can only hope there will be a book 2!! I absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking for a new take on shifter m/m romance.

a difficult book to find words

The sexuality in the book is going to be a problem for some and rightly so. However, the effort to give the author a chance to explore an alternate idea of life is integral to the sexuality as a bridge. Exploration of sensory guides can come to an author in different ways. Patric Rothfuss used sensory portraits to explore a lifeform in The Slow Regard of Silent Things. A difficult animation was attempted in The Alchemy of Stone by Ekaterina Stevens. The sexuality in this book is about the challenge between life and death. It is a fair thesis for story telling and the use of explicit sex to drive the desperation between the two dimensional notions perhaps the most universal experience for this problem. Personally I may think the author used the sexuality with more license than needed. It was not my story or my notion of sexuality and the point of the story is actually made. It is fantasy and when a point is made through fantasy there should be applause.

Loved it

Enjoy this book and great beginning to a series. Nox got a little on my nerves not able to e with Lucas. Still doesn’t take away from a great story. This is a wonderful narrator and did a perfect job.
