Alice Kay Hill is a Kansan through and through. She spent every summer of her childhood in Atwood, reveling in the hot south winds the state is named for, learning to grow beans in her grandmother's garden, and swinging in a hammock beneath towering elms with a favorite book in hand. At eighteen she married a Kansas farmer and spent the next forty years sharing in the trials of farming and ranching. She and her husband experienced first hand the Farm Crisis of the 1980's. Turning that upheaval into opportunity she returned to college for a Registered Nurse degree, working in all facets of health care. Starting over on a new place, she and her family started a hunting lodge, transitioned to organic wheat, bought and restored the 1907 Shirley Opera House which was placed on the Registries of Historic Places, developed a fine dining restaurant/live music venue, and began earnestly pursuing a local food movement. Throughout all of this Alice used her inherited writing skills to further each project. She continues to promote the history of Kansas, the opportunities of Kansas, and her belief that it is one of the most challenging and rewarding states to thrive in. Her grandchildren represent seven generations who live in Kansas.
