Bronze Medal Winner of the 2013 Readers Favorite International Book Awards Contest!! Many people ask, "Why did you become a writer?" My answer is simple; the profession chose me, I did not choose it. On a late fall afternoon in 2007, I was driving home from my after-school program when a young male shoved an M-16 rifle into my window. I remember looking straight down the barrel of the gun, frozen with disbelief. My head was void of thoughts and emotions. There was no "life flashing before my eyes" and I didn't think of my children. I simply waited for an orange flash which never came. Although no shots were physically fired, my entire world was blown apart in that instance. Too many things were left unchecked on my "bucket list" including my dream of becoming a paramedic. Since spring of 2008, I went from being a teacher to serving as an Emergency Medical Technician for NM. I have loved and hated every aspect of my job all at the same time. It has taught me to never take anything for granted...especially my loved ones and my health. From delivering a homeless drunk to the hospital to restarting the heart of a child who has drowned, I do my best to uphold the oath I have taken. For thirteen grueling hours a day, my emotional roller coaster must remain hidden so I can be the "rock" for my patients. I rescue broken people from car crashes and hold grandma's hand simply because she's terrified of going back to the hospital for the third time in six months. These are their stories by which fate has chosen me to share them with you.
