CAROLYN KAY BRANCATO is the author of two critically acclaimed historical novels: The Night Belongs to the Maquis and The Circus Pig & the Kaiser. Based on personal interviews with members of the French Resistance, as well as extensive research, The Night Belongs to the Maquis captures the sweep of war and the courageous actions of those fighting fascism. Lauded as "a powerful, heartbreaking novel," it is a tale of heroism of those fighting Nazi occupation in a small village in the Pyrenees. The Circus Pig & the Kaiser received rave reviews as "a fast-paced drama of wit and humor amid politically charged circumstances." It is based on a true incident -- in 1907, a poor Russian traveling circus performer trains his prized pig to mimic the Kaiser, in order to save the circus and marry his love. Taking place during the build-up to WWI, the novel is a rollicking satire of the lengths to which people will go to protest an unjust war as well as to preserve their freedom of expression. As well as being a novelist, Carolyn is a director, choreographer and playwright. Her plays have been mounted at the former John Houseman Theatre in NY, at Steppenwolf in Chicago and at the Church Street Theatre in DC. She has directed at Ensemble Studio Theatre, the Source Theatre and the Church Street Theatre. In addition, Carolyn has done choreography for the DC City Ballet as well as the film Gardens of Stone, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. She created the play Censored to celebrate the First Amendment and bring to life banned books, art, and other cultural institutions that have been repressed. She has workshopped plays at Ensemble Studio Theatre in NYC and is currently a member of Berkshire Voices, a playwriting group devoted to developing new plays under the auspices of the Great Barrington Public Theatre. Carolyn writes historical fiction that combines a deep understanding of human nature with the sweep of major events in history. She has a B.A. degree from Barnard College and a Ph.D. from New York University. Carolyn lives in the Berkshires with her husband.
