David Philip Pompeani, born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania, attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned his B.S. (2009) and Ph.D. (2015) degrees in geology. His research has led to numerous publications in journals such as Scientific Reports, Geology, and Quaternary Science Reviews. Notably, in a 2013 publication in Environmental Science & Technology, he and his colleagues demonstrated that sediment cores from small lakes in northern Michigan can be used to detect pollution related to indigenous copper mining. His research has been featured in various outlets, including Discover Magazine, Science, NPR, YouTube, and Archaeology Magazine. Currently, David works at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
