David Skarbek is the Michael Targoff Professor of Political Economy and the Director of the Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Brown University. His new book, The Puzzle of Prison Order, explains why life behind bars varies around the world. It recieved the "Outstanding Book Award" from the International Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. In his first book, The Social Order of the Underworld, he uses economics to explain why gangs have come to dominate many American prisons. His academic articles have been published in leading journals, including the American Political Science Review, Journal of Law, Economics, & Organization, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Journal of Criminal Justice, and Public Choice. He gives talks about political and economic issues across the United States and around the world, including recent academic seminars and public talks in Wales, Belgium, Italy, England, and in the United States, including at UC Berkeley, Harvard, MIT, Stanford University, and the National Bureau of Economic Research. He has also held professional appointments at Duke University, King's College London, and University of California, Berkeley.
