Ed Orzechowski has authored memoirs of two individuals who grew up at the former Belchertown State School in Massachusetts. In the 1960s, the institution became infamous for abuse and neglect of its residents. In 1972, a class action lawsuit in federal court in Boston led to improvements before the facility was shuttered in 1992. Becoming Darlene—The Story of Belchertown Patient #4952, was published in November of 2024. Orzechowski’s previous work, You’ll Like It Here—The Story of Donald Vitkus, Belchertown Patient #3394, has been a #1 Best Seller for Levellers Press. Ed Orzechowski is past president of Advocacy Network, Inc., and in 2019 was the recipient of the Dr. Benjamin Ricci Commemorative Award at the Massachusetts Statehouse. He and his wife Gail are longtime advocates for individuals with developmental disabilities. A retired high school English teacher, print and radio journalist, Ed lives with his wife Gail in Northampton, Massachusetts.
