Erika wishes she could have, but did not attend university. After escaping the confines of the KwaSizabantu compound at the age of 21 – where they employed her as a teacher despite her lack of training – she had to find a job in order to survive. She has carved a career for herself in magazine publishing despite her lack of formal training, and has written for various publications and edited several custom magazines. Erika came to publishing (and her senses) only in her thirties. In her twenties she worked as a barmaid, waitress, receptionist and client-service consultant. There was a three-month stint as an activities coordinator at a resort in Greece that included her teaching aqua aerobics and consolidated her understanding of herself as someone who is not athletic. The only thing she runs these days are baths, though she loves hiking in and around the beautiful city calls home: Cape Town. She has no children, but has two cats she adores. They – and her other loves: wine, gin and good food – are getting her through lockdown, life and (hopefully) love.
