”Gilda Mirós is an award-winning journalist, a trained performer, and a seasoned entrepreneur, and she is also the first Latina to host her own nationally aired radio show on SBS. Her extensive pioneering work in broadcast journalism has been included in the Smithsonian’s national collections.
Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and raised in the Bronx, New York City, Gilda Mirós fluidly moves between English and Spanish in a deep, rich voice that is recognized across the United States, Latin America, and Spain. Mirós has been an actress in film, theater, and television in Mexico, Puerto Rico, USA and a lead at the famed Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York.
Mirós’ warmth, anchored live weekly radio transmissions from Latin America & Spain. Her training, commitment, and energy earned her a space as the first female–and first Latina–Staff Radio Announcer, a four-hour live talk show host, producer at WADO NYC. With a full-bodied voice and easy-going charm, she broadcast Hispanic contributions to music, poetry, art, and politics into the homes of Spanish speaking populations from Miami to New York to Los Angeles; and now with an international Podcast. Mirós’ vibrant style and passionate voice has guided thousands of visitors to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, she also narrated a documentary about Latinos in the Vietnam War, and performed for the USO.
Mirós’ dedication to connecting the world through stories led her to, produce a documentary at New York’s infamous Rikers Island jail; interviewing the Latino inmates.
Miros dubbed the voice of famed catholic nun; Mother Angelica, founder of EWTN, Radio & TV, on her “Mother Angelica Live” TV International series.
Mirós was the Executive Producer and Host of the 65th Anniversary of the Cuban concert , “Sonora Matancera with Celia Cruz and co-stars,” at Carnegie Hall and Central Park in New York City, and she served as a consultant for “AMERICAN EPIC,” a three-part PBS documentary produced by Robert Redford and Jack White in 2017.
Mirós has spent her life highlighting the spark and diversity of Hispanic experience at every level. She still produces a half hour biweekly all access cable TV show; recently winning two Media National Awards. Several of her 10 authored books demonstrate the diversity of stories that she tells. Her book, “De La Montaña Venimos: Iconos de Latinoamerica” (2014) (We Come From the Mountains: Icons of Latin America), transcribes interviews from 1978 to 1999 with notable Hispanic musicians. When her mother was 90 years old, Mirós added her own photographs to her mother’s creative enthusiasm for children’s hygiene in “Hortensia y sus Patitos Felices - Hortense & Her Happy Ducklings” (2006). She also wrote a spiritual memoir, “Memorias de los Espíritus y Mi Madre” (Spirit Messages to My Mother) & “Alas Místicas” (Mystical Wings) “En Contacto con Mami en Espíritu” (In Touch with Mom in Spirit) all gather inspirational messages Mirós received through & from her mother, Monserrate Conesa. And of course Mirós demonstrates her particular love for the vibrant world of Latin music in her best-selling paperback, “Celia Cruz y La Sonora Matancera” (2003) (Celia Cruz and The Sonora Matancera), which includes two decades of interviews that chronicle the experience of Afro-latina musical icon Celia Cruz during her time performing in Cuba’s premier musical group.
The dynamic nature and lasting impact of Mirós’ work is evidenced in the recognition she has received. With accolades that span from opera to theater, from journalism to documentary, Mirós has evolved into a Hispanic institution. She is an 18-time award winner as Best Announcer, Best Actress, Best Theater Performance, and Best Radio show by the Asociación de Cronistas de Espectáculos de Nueva York (ACE). Her values and talent have led to being recognized as outstanding figure of the year with Puerto Rico’s Agüeybana de Oro award. In 2016, Mirós was inducted into the Smithsonian Museum for the first time as part of their exhibit, “Escúchame: the History of Spanish Language Broadcasting in the U.S.” for hosting/producing “Domingos en el Uno” SIN’s first 4 hour Spanish live TV show in the USA. Mirós’ drive to showcase the spirit and impact of Hispanic contributions in the US is now part of The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Her work is displayed in a bilingual showcase entitled, “¡De última hora!: Latinas Report Breaking News.” As the author of 10 books in both Spanish and English, and as an accomplished radio personality and performer, it is no surprise that in 2020, Mirós was honored to receive the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Lifetime Achievement Award.
Her latest work is a creative homage to Latina voices in an album that echoes poetry and music from around the world. The album, Poética, features Mirós’ iconic voice highlighting a collection of poems written over generations, spanning from 1698 (“Redondillas”) to 2022 (“Carambola”). The album is arranged by Christian Valencia and produced by music industry veteran and former Sony music executive Anthony Gonzalez. Mirós is accompanied on piano by Latin Grammy Award Winner Enrique “Kike” Purizaga, Jazz Flautist and Latin Grammy Award Winner Néstor Torres, among other musicians.
The compilation emerges from the work of Latin American women originating in Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and the US. Poética demonstrates Mirós’ desire to express the energy and verve of Latina life in performance. Poética features Mirós’ delivering nine poems, eight with musical accompaniment, including one astonishing duet with LatinX screenwriter and actor, Daniela Gonzalez y Perez entitled, “Carambola.” The final track, a poem written and performed a cappella by Mirós, is called “Dedicatoria,”
