James Mills's interest in pilgrimage has grown over the years. He has had the opportunity to visit pilgrimage destinations in Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, India, the Levant, France, and the US. He has conducted research and written about the notion of sacred place in the feng shui landscapes of East Asia and in the siting of burial mounds in the Upper Mississippi River Basin. He regularly teaches a course called Religion, Spirit, and Environment. He is a professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability at the State University of New York - Oneonta. He teaches a number of courses on Asia, cultural geography, and environmental sustainability. He served as the director of the Environmental Sciences Program for eight years and helped create a new major in Environmental Sustainability. When he has time, he carves wooden spoons and builds stone walls and structures.
