Joanna Foat grew up in Surrey, Great Britain, with a love for the outdoors, forests, and wildlife. Her fascination with forestry began early when her father gave her an axe for Christmas. She studied Psychology BSc at Hull University and MSc at Surrey University. Now a communications consultant and editor for environmental organisations, Joanna discovered the Lumberjills in 2012 while working for the Forestry Commission. Inspired by their adventurous spirit and pioneering roles in forestry during World War II, Joanna dedicated herself to uncovering and preserving their remarkable legacy. She has spent over a decade interviewing more than 60 former Lumberjills and sharing their stories through books, talks, and exhibitions. Joanna is the author of Lumberjills Britain’s Forgotten Army, The Lumberjills Photo Book and The Lumberjills Stronger Together, the first novel in a series. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, TV’s Walking Wartime Britain, and Dan Snow’s History Hit Podcast.
