Joyce Frisby Baynes graduated from Swarthmore College with a major in mathematics. She was one of the Seven Sisters who was a first-generation college student at Swarthmore. Joyce played a key role in the Swarthmore Afro American Student Society, often as an advisor to the other Sisters. Her tutoring of underserved teens in the Upward Bound Program during her college years inspired her to be a leader in education, as a teacher of mathematics and a public school administrator. After Swarthmore, Joyce earned an M.A.T. in mathematics from Harvard University and an M.Ed. in Administration and a Doctorate in Mathematics Education from Columbia University. Joyce has a great love for mathematics and compassion for youth who don't have the privilege of enjoying quality education. Since her retirement, Joyce co-founded the nonprofit organization Future Forward for Haiti, Inc. that supports three schools in the mountain areas of Haiti. She is a past Board member of the Volunteer Center of Bergen County, New Jersey and serves on the Board of the Community Scholarship Fund of Teaneck. Joyce lives in Teaneck, New Jersey and has three married sons and six precious grandchildren.
