It was in fourth grade that Julie Hunt realized God had given her a gift of communication when her daddy affectionately nicknamed her the Newspaper. This was, of course, due to her exceptional memory and flawless, detailed descriptions of the day’s events at the nightly dinner table. While dad’s nickname for her was most likely in jest, she took it as high praise, because after all, someone needed to be the family know-it-all and she was delighted to fill the position. After high school she realized that broadcast journalism was a more efficient way to deliver the news, so Julie made plans to earn her degree in Radio-Television-Film at Oklahoma State University. She met David, her first husband, while working at a public radio station delivering the daily drive time news breaks and producing a weekly program called Oklahoma Opinions. After ten years of marriage and juggling life as a wife with two small children, this stay-at-home mom decided to dust off her journalism skills and write a babysitting curriculum. She started with teaching the neighborhood teens a new skill set, and when the training took off David and Julie together launched Smart Kids 101. Today, their programs—Babysitting 101, Safe Kids 101 and Polite Kids 101—through live-based teaching and online eCourses, have trained more than twenty-five thousand students in important life skills. Afer David’s relocation in 2004, Julie became a parenting columnist for Nashville’s largest newspaper, The Tennessean. She continues her parenting advice in the form of blogging from her company’s website, smartkids101.com. She lives in Franklin, Tennessee with husband Kye, and they are doubly blessed to have their blended family of seven adult kids and three grandkids close by.
