Justin is a blue-collar redneck masquerading as a white-collar professional. He might be Director of Emerging Technology for a digital-product design agency in Salt Lake City, but at the end of the day, he heads back to his house in a rural outpost to relax by building bike trails on his property with his backhoe, a 1972 International that still fires up anytime he needs it. (The thing looks decrepit, but Justin used it to trench the power lines to his house.) You’re far more likely to catch him in steel-toed boots and Carhartts than designer shoes and skinny jeans. He couldn’t even begin to pull off a man bun. Justin is not a conformer. He places high value on changing the way things “have always been done” and makes it a point to constantly question both rules and authority. He deeply believes that there is a better way to do just about anything and has an inability to sit with the status quo. But despite his rogue nature, Justin is an excellence-seeker, a perfectionist who has worked in digital since AOL was the go-to ISP. He’s passionate about digital—always has been—and has a knack for simplifying what others tend to overcomplicate. He thrives in chaotic conditions, needs tough problems to solve, and while he is considered a nightmare to work with by some, clients and colleagues who want to get products out the door always seem to call him back. His work ethic comes from his upbringing in his father’s heavy metal fabrication shop, where hard work was a number one value and even the boss’s son had to prove himself, cleaning industrial shop toilets and welding back together broken dumpsters. It’s here he learned to question everything, finding ways to save the company money by streamlining inefficient processes or building a better jig. There was a lot of sailor language on the shop floor, but the values Justin learned here have served him well throughout his life and career, teaching him to move beyond the status quo into the realm of real vision and innovative ideas.
