PAST: I'm a cultural studies scholar/Duke U Prof Emerita (Law, AfAm Studies) and an #HBCU alum. Legal Fictions (DukeUP) is my most recent academic book. PRESENT: Emerita life is a fiction! A Death in Harlem (Triquarterly 2019) was Book 1 in my #inHarlem series and introduces Weldon Thomas as Harlem's first "colored" policeman. It returns to the final scene of Nella Larsen's Passing (was she pushed? did she jump? fall?) with Olivia Frelon and Vera Scott as the light-enough-to-pass best friends with the siditty habits of Harlem's 'e-lights' and their household help under scrutiny. Gone Missing in Harlem (April 2021) spans the Great Migration (and the flu pandemic), and travels through the Harlem Renaissance to the Great Depression where the Lindbergh baby is not the only baby gone missing. Harlem wants to find its own little girl, seemingly snatched straight from her pram in front of Chasen's grocery. "Where's the F B and I when one of our chirren goes missing?" Can Officer Weldon Thomas unravel this mystery? And...it could be that "A Haunting in Harlem" might join the series in the not too distant future. Stay tuned to Twitter @ProfHolloway for updates and general 180 characterizations of life-in-the-emerita lane (keeping in mind always there be seduction in crafting a fiction).
