Inspired by studies at Columbia University's Earth Institute, A PANGOLIN SLEPT ON BUDDHA'S LAP is the first in a series of novels about endangered wildlife. Granted, the pangolin is an unlikely creature for inspiration, but the ant-eating, scale-covered mammal stands in for all the overlooked species. Though Climate Change has eclipsed Wildlife Conservation, the environmental crisis was (and is) exacerbated by losing touch with the natural world. Perhaps reconnecting with nonhuman animals will reveal new paths, or at least raise awareness about the urgency for preservation. GATHER THE ANIMALS, the second title in the series, covers the mission to save the virtually extinct red wolves in North Carolina's coastal marshes. The novel serves as a cautionary tale about the hubris of assuming extirpated creatures can miraculously be restored. As seen from the point of view of biologists, the fictional account of tragedies and strategies contains enough science to enlighten and enough drama to tug heart-strings. While seeking a publisher for GATHER, I am also researching a third novel, STEP INTO THE WATER, which dives into the mystery of the vanishing North Atlantic right whale.
