I am a North Carolina native, a musicologist, a teacher, violinist, a lecturer, a consultant, and a writer. I am also a historian of popular music, classical music, and a theorist of how music functions through sound, identity, culture, and politics at large. As an Associate Professor in the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, I teach courses ranging from Queer Popular Music to The Legacy of Motown. As a scholar, I have published several works, including my book, Blacksound (University of California Press, 2024), and have held fellowships ranging from the American Council of Learned Societies to Harvard University. As a lecturer, I have presented at Institutions from Cambridge University to High Schools in New York City. As a music historian, lecturer, and consultant, I have worked with organizations ranging from The Shed, NYC to Warner Music Group London. My work also centers on equity and justice within society and the production of commercial popular music.
