Mayuri Saxena is a proud New Yorker and child of Indian immigrants. She’s worked as a public servant, was married to a Pakistani citizen in the tumultuous, paranoid aftermath of 9/11, and despite being targeted by the FBI for interrogation, was selected for the highly competitive Presidential Management Fellows program. A woman of multiple identities and skills, Mayuri has remained flexible through life’s twists and turns, none more so than the diagnosis she received in her early thirties that would reshape her existence. Her memoir, “The Pursuit of Happiness: From Heels to Wheels” is an intimate account of losing the ability to walk, work, and function as she always had, but in turn finding the gifts of wisdom, peace and self-love. Since writing the book, Mayuri has been diagnosed with a genetic mutation consistent with ALS, or Lou Gherig’s disease. It is life threatening and as of now, there is no cure. But this doesn’t stop Mayuri from laughing with her friends, helping the homeless, mentoring kids at Youth Boxing for Change, or spoiling Theo, her fluffy Whoodle (Wheaton Terrier-Poodle) more than is normal—or healthy. Mayuri loves connecting with readers. You can follow her at www.mayurisaxena.com.
