Melissa Newman, Ed.D. is an award-winning journalist, a novelist, and professor of communication. She has committed her career to making Kentucky’s Appalachia a better place to live, work, grow, and thrive. Melissa earned her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies from Eastern Kentucky University. Her master’s degree is in secondary education and her bachelor’s degree is in business management and communication, both from Union College. Her ongoing research, rooted in Kentucky’s Appalachia, studies methods of raising hope in communities through the erosion of negative stereotypes and reveals economic implications for individuals and regional populations.
