Narda Zacchino has been a professional journalist, writer and editor since graduating from UCLA in 1970. Her most recent book, California Comeback: How a “Failed State” Became a Model for the Nation (August 2016), was praised by California historian Kevin Starr as “a fast-moving and informed tour de force of contemporary history.” She also is co-author with Mary Tillman of Boots on The Ground by Dusk: My Tribute to Pat Tillman (2008) and it’s updated Boots on the Ground by Dusk: Searching for Answers in the Death of Pat Tillman (2010). She currently is a senior fellow at the Annenberg Center for Communication Leadership and Policy in addition to working as an independent writer and editor. As a small business entrepreneur, she co-launched the book publishing company, Time Capsule Press, which she serves as editor and publisher. In 1995, Ms. Zacchino co-created the ongoing Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, which draws more than 100,000 to the campus of the University of California on a weekend every April. During her 31 years at the Los Angeles Times, Ms. Zacchino worked her way up the ranks from copy messenger to reporter, government and politics editor, Sacramento bureau chief, Orange County editor, and associate editor and vice president. She was a long-time member of the American Society of News Editors, serving as chair of its diversity committee, and was a four-time Pulitzer Prize judge. After leaving The Times, she worked at the San Francisco Chronicle as deputy editor, the Center for Investigative Reporting as an editor, and for The Real News Network and Truthdig as a consultant. Along the way, she helped women break barriers in the journalism world and served as a member of the Board of Directors for the International Women’s Media Foundation and Journalism and Women’s Symposium. She has edited numerous books including those published by Time Capsule Press: The Washington Post Cookbook (2013), The Four Seasons of Yosemite: A Photographer’s Journey (2011), The Los Angeles Lakers: 50 Amazing Years in the City of Angels, Revised Edition (2010, a bestseller in the Wall Street Journal Sports category), and Journey to the Ring: Behind the Scenes with the 2010 Champion Lakers. (2010). She also edited three books by Robert Scheer: They Know Everything About You: How Data-Collecting Corporations an Snooping Government Agencies are Destroying Democracy (2015), The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street While Mugging Main Street (2010), and The Pornography of Power: How Defense Hawks Hijacked 9/11 and Weakened America, by Robert Scheer (2008).
