Richard A. Arenberg is Clarence Adams and Rachel Adams Visiting Professor of the Practice of Political Science and a Senior Fellow in International and Public Affairs at Brown University. He is Interim Director of the Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy at Brown and a Senior Fellow at Brown's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. He previously taught at Northeastern University and Suffolk University. Arenberg is the author of the recently published "Congressional Procedure: A Practical Guide to the Legislative Process in the U.S. Congress." Kirkus Reviews has called it, "A clear explanation of the workings of the United States government that should be required reading for politically engaged Americans." He co-authored the award-winning "Defending the Filibuster: Soul of the Senate," named “Book of the Year in Political Science” by Foreword Reviews in 2012. A second edition was published in 2014. He served on Capitol Hill for 34 years in senior Congressional staff positions, as Chief of Staff or Legislative Director for Majority Leader George Mitchell, and Senators Paul Tsongas and Carl Levin. Among other roles during his career, he served on the Senate Iran-Contra Committee in 1987, was a major negotiator of the landmark Alaska Lands bill in 1980. He was Chief of Staff to the Deputy President Pro Tempore of the Senate and the National Security Advisor to the Senate Majority Leader. "Richard A. Arenberg: Oral History Interviews" was published by the Senate Historical Office in 2011 and can be found (and heard) on the US Senate website and can be purchased through the Government Printing Office. It was conducted by Senate Historian Donald Ritchie. He serves on the Board of Directors of Social Security Works and the Social Security Education Fund. He is an affiliate at the Taubman Center for American Politics & Policy. He is also a senior Congressional fellow at the Stennis Center for Public Service Leadership. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Providence Journal, Politico, USA Today and The Boston Globe.
