Former NASA astronaut and highly decorated combat fighter Ron Garan racked up 178 days in space and more than 71 million miles in 2,842 orbits during tours on the International Space Station after launching to space aboard the US Space Shuttle and Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Prior to those journeys, he lived and conducted research on the bottom of the ocean in the world’s only undersea research lab, Aquarius. Before reaching the summit of his career, Ron, a former test pilot and graduate of the US Naval Test Pilot School, taught hundreds of aspiring pilots how to "up their game" at the prestigious USAF Fighter Weapons School, the Air Force version of Top Gun. Today, Ron is celebrated for his research in space and for his humanitarian contribution to life on Earth. In Floating in Darkness: A Journey of Evolution, a follow-up to his critically acclaimed first book, The Orbital Perspective: Lessons in Seeing the Big Picture from a Journey of 71 Million Miles, we’re right alongside Ron on his journey of evolution. We travel with him as he explores the dancing, intersecting orbits of religion, spirituality, and science, ponders nuclear deterrence, and grapples with his own intimate role in the violence of combat and its implications on human life. We see the universe through his eyes from the ocean floor to Earth orbit and back. We’re there as Ron struggles with what it means to be mortal and basks in the sheer wonder and beauty of our world and beyond.
