Books, paper, and ink have always been a passion of mine. I would draw and constantly read everything in sight for as long as I could remember. My mother, an artist, taught me how to draw with the right brain drawing techniques at three years old. I thrived under her watchful eye, and while I sat below her easel with the smell of turpentine and wood fire as she painted on rainy days. I loved drawing in art galleries while she had shows or classes. Painting with both her and my grandmother was one of my favorite activities. My father catered to my love of books by reading to me in the evenings as I would draw or color. Our simple life in our country home in the mountains gave me time to focus on learning and allowing time for stillness. I didn’t fully understand the importance of this as a child. As I grew up, education was always encouraged and supported. I helped mom with backdrops for school plays; she was also a sponsor of our yearbook. I chose to get a degree in healthcare. However, my true passion was art and literature. I would spend most of my college years and time off with people reading T.S. Eliot and weekends going to art festivals, Shakespeare in the park, and used bookstores. I loved my little bunny named Eliot and dreamed of illustrating children’s books like A. A. Milne and Beatrix Potter. Time passed, and I entertained the thought of illustrating more and more. I wanted to be an artist more than anything. I prepared to quit my professional day job and return to school to get my master’s degree in children’s book Illustration. After I was accepted, and shortly before starting, I found out I was expecting twin boys. My whole life was about to change. After five long months of strict bed rest, hoping and praying the pregnancy would get close to term, and reading many books, two beautiful, healthy boys, only four weeks premature, were born. In the following years, I found ways to do art with my children and youth. I believe things happen for a reason. The battles we face can make us stronger or become defeated. It is up to us to choose. It seems life has come full circle. My boys are grown, and I now am that “girl” up on the mountain, pen in hand, with a little more experience and insight, ready to write and draw once more. I hope to make a difference, be a light in the darkness to someone, a glimpse of hope that propels them to the path of their dreams.
