Vybarr Cregan-Reid was born in Manchester and lives in Yorkshire, where he runs Creative Writing, Media & Film (at the University of York St John). He's also a professor of Creative Non-Fiction. His current book is 'We Are What We Read', a look at the life-changing power of literature at a time when the academic subject is in crisis in universities across the world. The book looks at the history of the war on the humanities and offsets this against a very human story of how literature can change your life. Previously, he published 'Primate Change: How the World We Made is Remaking Us', a wide-ranging look at how the human body has changed been changed by modern living. He is writer and presenter for two series based on the book 'Changing World, Changing Bodies' which were broadcast on the BBC's World Service in 2020 and 2021. Try as he might, he usually ends up writing about bodies and places. You can say hello to him on Twitter: @vybarr or Insta @vybarrcr What the critics said about 'Footnotes' ‘Overflowing with ideas from science and philosophy, rich in literary allusions and filled with evocative descriptions of the landscapes he has run through, this is a wonderfully subtle and ambitious book.’ Guardian 'Accessible and thought-provoking…a layered memoir/manifesto/meditation on what happens when people move their feet' The Washington Post 'Footnotes is a blazing achievement. It burns with restless energy as Cregan-Reid, alive, alert, wholly and gloriously present, sets out his manifesto, encapsulated in his subtitle, that running makes us human.' Katharine Norbury Caught by the River ‘Cregan-Reid certainly isn’t the first running enthusiast to make the case for the physiological and psychological benefits of getting out into nature and working up a sweat. Yet few before have done it so artfully or completely… These delightful barefoot vignettes not only reveal Cregan-Reid’s passion for his subject, but also his deftness as a nature writer.’ Literary Review
