Historia
After the teenage daughter of a prominent Minnesota politician goes missing, a huge manhunt is launched to find her. But when Cork O’Connor’s grandson Waaboo stumbles across the shallow grave of a young Ojibwe woman while hunting blueberries, nobody seems to care. Nobody, that is, except Cork and the newly formed Iron Lake Ojibwe Tribal Police Department. As Cork and the tribal officers dig into the circumstances of her murder, they discover a link to the missing girl that suggests these are not isolated incidents, but evidence of something much more sinister.

Not for me
Revisado: 08-22-24
I have loved this series up until the last couple of entries. This will be the last I read in the series. As with so many authors, over time, Krueger has fallen into the familiar trap of force feeding his message rather than simply delivering a good story. Sadly, I’m leaving Krueger and O’Connor for good this time.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 06-13-24
I guess I’ll have to be the dissenting vote here. Although I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, this has been my least favorite book to date. I felt the story was choppy with too many storylines introduced and the distraction of the illness that ran through the squad. The ending was, in my opinion, over the top melodramatic, right up until the grieving cop pops up and decides to bounce right back, saying this is what her partner would have wanted! From tragedy to fortitude in a blink. The scene was given too much time and attention, probably so Gatward could drive home his ever increasing need to deliver his various messages. I’ve often found this tendency in long-running series. Rather than relying on their gift as outstanding storytellers, authors feel the need to beat us over our heads with their m-e—s-s-a-g-e. Yawn! In this case, the story and its’ telling suffered.

Historia
Callum and his three best friends are celebrating their eighteenth birthdays with an epic camping trip to the mysterious Llanddwyn Island, off the coast of Anglesey. Then Callum disappears, and the others return to the mainland in a state of shock. When his body is discovered, DI Laura Hart is brought in to investigate. Is the murder the work of the Fair Men, a pagan group with a dark history who still hold their ceremonies on the island? Or were the boys less tight-knit than they would have Laura believe?

Very Disappointed
Revisado: 01-22-24
I really enjoy this series. The setting, the characters, and the ongoing, developing relationships and sub-plot are all engaging and exciting. However, the ending on this book was just a cheap trick.

Ugh!
Revisado: 12-30-23
I didn’t realize, until now, exactly how critical the narration is to the success of an audiobook. That’s probably because I haven’t come across such a bad narrator, until now! What audiobook narrator thinks it’s a good idea to whisper half the time while reading the book? Ridiculous! What was probably another excellent book in this series, was ruined because I missed half of it. I spent the entire book raising and lowering the volume and rewinding. I’ll avoid this narrator in the future.

Fun read, unsatisfactory ending
Revisado: 12-02-23
I really enjoy this series. It’s pretty light, overall, but still entertaining. I particularly enjoy the witchy, second sight, mystical elements of this series. This book had an interesting story going, but failed to fully capitalize. The ending came suddenly and was wrapped up in a few paragraphs in a very unsatisfactory way. I actually went back to re-listen to the last charter and the epilogue, feeling I had maybe missed something. When you’ve written an engaging story, please take the time to relish in the wrap-up and completely satisfy your readers. I feel the abrupt ending was a missed opportunity.

Bring Back Sarah Nichols!
Revisado: 11-27-23
I love this series; the post-war setting, the challenges the women face in business and in life in general, and the relationship between the two main characters. WHY, at this stage in the series, would a new narrator be introduced? This new one absolutely ruins the whole feel of the story. She completely lacks the fun, the wit, and the posh voice for the aristocrats that made the other books so entertaining. She offers no distinction between the voices of the other characters so that it becomes difficult to tell who is speaking.

Not good
Revisado: 10-29-23
I’m not sure to what extent this was just bad or just not for me. I found the story to be terribly slow and extremely silly. McMahon’s prior novels have been much more successful creating an eerie, mystical, and potentially believable story(if you have a vivid imagination). Having dragged the story out too long, I then felt the ending was rushed. I’m hoping her next effort is more successful as I’ve very much enjoyed her previous books.

Such an outstanding series!
Revisado: 10-22-23
I anxiously await each new release in this, one of my most favorite, detective series. I am an avid, voracious and constant reader/listener and I have to say that I consider Gytha Lodge to be one of the very best writers of the genre. The stories are compelling, exciting, and so intelligently written while still managing to have just the right amount of personal, private details included of the characters involved. I think the reader is excellent as well, playing it straight and serious throughout without trying to steal the show from the excellent story unfolding.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-19-23
A convoluted and overly complicated story. Many of the characters were just absurdly unbelievable and the mystery dragged on interminably. I’ve been a devoted fan of this series up until now, but this was a big miss for me. This narrator just grates on my nerves with her halting, stuttering, monotone delivery. Hopefully, the next in the series returns to its more serous, believable origins.
