Historia
One grey dismal day, Janine Marsh was on a trip to northern France to pick up some cheap wine. She returned to England a few hours later having put in an offer on a rundown old barn in the rural Seven Valleys area of Pas de Calais. This was not something she'd expected or planned for. Janine eventually gave up her job in London to move with her husband to live the good life in France. Or so she hoped. While getting to grips with the locals and la vie Française, and renovating her dilapidated new house, a building lacking the comforts of mains drainage, heating, or proper rooms.

Very entertaining and inspiring story
Revisado: 05-24-21
The story is very entertaining and inspiring and brings back a lot of good memories of cycling through that region. It’s wonderful that there’s a book describing this overlooked region of France. But why couldn’t the writer have read this herself? Her jokes are funny, but they lose their punch by the way the narrator reads them. Also the narrator keeps stressing the wrong syllable when pronouncing the French words, really annoying! (Especially if you know that, according to a story towards the end of the book, the writer sometimes gets mistaken for a native speaker.)

basically the same as episode 1
Revisado: 10-01-18
this is basically the same as episode 1,
not a step towards deeper relaxation as the title suggests.
The narrator sounds a bit bossy, almost angry, not a pleasant or peaceful voice, but that might be personal.
Again, as in episode 1, she doesn't take as much time for each body part to guide you through making that body part still,
as if after only 5 minutes you should know how to do it yourself.

ok for focusing on breath and stilling body
Revisado: 10-01-18
this is ok for getting you to focus on your breath, and still your body.
the narrator, to my taste, sounds a bit bossy, almost angry though,
and doesn't take the same amount of time for each body part,
as if to suggest that once you've done 3 body parts, you should know what to do and don't need more guidance

several mistakes & counting sheep!
Revisado: 10-01-18
Supposed to be a guided meditation to get you to go to sleep more peacefully.
The first two episodes were OK, though almost identical, and with the narrator sounding bossy, almost angry, not a peaceful voice.
In this episode she makes three mistakes, where she is supposed to be guiding the *left* arm to be still, but she looses track, and instead starts guiding you to have your right arm still (but she already did that one), and then says "stiff" instead of "still." she corrects herself, but this was NOT edited out.
I was starting to get annoyed, but tried to go back to my breath, and keep listening. And what happened then was just too ridiculous. She told the listener to visualize a green field with a white picket fence. This was already getting strange, because why a FENCE when you want people to be peaceful, but OK. But then, there were thousands of .... wait for it ... Sheep!!!
And she had the listener counting sheep. I kid you not.

Historia
"In mid-July of 1879, John Muir sailed for the first time through the sheer-walled fjords of Alaska's Inside Passage. 'Never before this,' he wrote, 'had I been embosomed in scenery so hopelessly beyond description.' During the previous 15 years, Muir had vanished into the north woods of Canada, walked a thousand miles from Kentucky to the Gulf of Mexico, and nested himself in the granite heart of California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Wild nature burned with volcanic intensity in the core of John Muir's soul."

Can't stand the narrator
Revisado: 07-12-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I'm listening to audiobooks because of post concussion syndrome I'm unable to read.
I have read parts of this book (paper version) and loved it but mostly because the descriptions are beautiful and calming. I believe John Muir was a calm man who didn't easily get upset. But this narrator has so much restlessness in his voice! I couldn't stand it so would like to return this.
