Historia
The passionate and tragic story of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff is one of the high points of 19th-century Romantic literature. In the relationship of Cathy and Heathcliff, and in the wild, bleak Yorkshire Moors of its setting, Wuthering Heights creates a world of its own, conceived with a disregard for convention and an instinct for poetry and the darkest depths of the human soul in torment.

Patricia Routledge got me through this one
Revisado: 03-25-25
I do enjoy the classics, but not generally these verbose gothic tales. Wuthering Heights was on my "I missed this one in school and it's on my list" listens. If it weren't for Patricia Routledge's outstanding narration, I doubt I would have finished it.

Historia
On June 4, 1944, the course of World War II was forever changed. That day, a US Navy task force achieved the impossible—capturing a German U-Boat. Called Operation Nemo, it was the first seizure of an enemy ship in battle since the War of 1812, one of the greatest achievements of the US Navy and a victory that shortened the duration of the war. A deeply researched, fast-paced World War II narrative for the ages, Charles Lachman’s white-knuckled war saga and thrilling cat-and-mouse game is told through the eyes of the men on both sides of Operation Nemo.

Great narration and story!
Revisado: 03-06-25
I'm not a WWII buff, but Codename Nemo caught my attention in part because it was nominated for an Audie Award and because it is still so relatively unknown a story. It did not disappoint! The way it is written and narrated makes it a fresh and compelling adventure tale, with well-timed moments of suspense and humor. Mr. Marshall's narration is flawless, and I will seek out more of his work.

Historia
In the spring of 1914, renowned photographer August Sander took a photograph of three young men on their way to a country dance. This haunting image, capturing the last moments of innocence on the brink of World War I, provides the central focus of Powers' brilliant and compelling novel. As the fate of the three farmers is chronicled, two contemporary stories unfold.

This used to be a favorite of mine
Revisado: 11-16-24
Richard Powers's ability to converge disparate narratives and timelines blows me away. His intellect and style have always challenged me. I first read Three Farmers in the 90s, and I loved it. I don't love the audiobook so much. Is that because my taste has changed, or is it because some authors and some works just don't translate well to this format? I'm not sure. Audiobooks can open up a new frontier in your life. You can clean house, go for walks, drive your car, etc., as opposed to being pinned to a chair with a book in hand. Having said that...In my opinion, certain books, certain authors, do not go over well in this medium. I don't think it's just that I don't like this narrator's style (I don't); I think Powers's books are better absorbed by actually reading them.

Historia
Persuasion, Jane Austen's last novel, is a tale of love and marriage told with irony and insight. Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth have met and seperated years before. Their reunion, after the passage or irrecoverable years of their youth, forces a recognition of the false values that drove them apart.

Revisado: 11-16-24
Persuasion is my second favorite Austen novel, only behind P&P. I love Greta Scacchi as an actress and as a narrator, and she does a lovely job with this lovely story. I'll certainly listen to it again.

Historia
Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

If only we could learn the lessons about war
Revisado: 11-16-24
I first read this book some twenty years ago and I remember thinking, 'if everyone would only read this book, maybe we could stop all the wars.' How naive I was. Young people always pay the price for the greed and ambition of the old. I still wish everyone would read this book. It's worth it, even if it doesn't change the world as it ought.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Barbara Kingsolver never disappoints
Revisado: 11-16-24
Brilliant. Demon Copperhead is essentially a modern American retelling of Dickens's David Copperfield, but it's so much more than that. Every Kingsolver book I've read has made me laugh and made my heart ache, and this one is no exception. She rightly was awarded the Pulitzer for it. I don't feel a need to go into deep analysis or spoilers, only to say if you love beautiful prose and great, meaningful, important storytelling, Demon Copperhead is not to be missed.

When she sees the officer and remembers her frightening experience, she screams and faints, and is rushed to the hospital.

A mixed bag
Revisado: 11-09-24
This book had an interesting premise, but the execution was often clunky and the text inelegant. It would have benefitted from proper editing. I have decided I need to get better at spotting self-published novels vs. conventionally published works. I absolutely do support the independent spirit, but honestly, I feel disappointed more often than not when I go this route.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-04-24
I went into this with high expectations, but found myself irritated by the plot holes and red herrings and unanswered questions. Without betraying the details, I just didn't think the parts of the story fit together in a meaningful way, and none of the characters were all that interesting.

I’ve seen the LOTR movies, but I’ve never really enjoyed reading fantasy novels. At the same time I’ve always heard how great they are. Serkis’s performance absolutely won me over.
