Historia
After Grand-mere Ursule gives her life to save her family, their magic seems to die with her. Even so, the Orchires fight to keep the old ways alive, practicing half-remembered spells and arcane rites in hopes of a revival. And when their youngest daughter comes of age, magic flows anew. The lineage continues, though new generations struggle not only to master their power, but also to keep it hidden. But when World War II looms on the horizon, magic is needed more urgently than ever.

Such Beautiful Writing, Such Terrible Characters

Witching hour
Revisado: 07-05-18
Polly Lee brought this complex tale of women and power to life. She switched skillfully between male and female characters in a way that was clear and believable. I was enthralled with the story because of her. I also thoroughly enjoyed Louisa Morgan’s talent in my weaving together a multi generational story. The weakest part of this outstanding book was the last section. The reader must suspend disbelief in one part of that story. However, you must read the book to find the one singular weakness in a stellar tale.

Really? Not her best but enjoyable none the less
Revisado: 06-02-18
When listening to this book, imagine it as a movie that incorporates multiple plot twists. Otherwise, the actions of the protagonist border on idiocy. He "can't believe this is happening" despite the fact that he's the source of his own misery. That being said, Scottoline incorporates plot elements that keep the listener listening until the neatly tied up ending. Perhaps the narrator contributes to my annoyance with his overly dramatic and often breathless performance. He imbues each character with his own interpretation rather than allowing the listener to develop a personal picture.

Historia
George Washington's Farewell Address was a prophetic letter from a "parting friend" to his fellow citizens about the forces he feared could destroy our democracy: hyper-partisanship, excessive debt, and foreign wars. Once celebrated as civic scripture, more widely reprinted than the Declaration of Independence, the Farewell Address is now almost forgotten. Its message remains starkly relevant. In Washington's Farewell, John Avlon offers a stunning portrait of our first president and his battle to save America from self-destruction.

Timely talk
Revisado: 05-24-18
John Avlon skillfully interweaves Washington's Farewell Speech into the complicated and tangled history of the Great American Experience of democracy. He allows readers to draw their own conclusions about the current state of our messy political system, remaining a neutral observer. The conclusion alone is worth the time.

Improbable Tale
Revisado: 05-08-18
Tana French is a fine and engaging writer, which is fortunate given the improbable nature of this twisted tale. I kept listening because, despite the need to stretch credulity, I enjoyed the narrator and French's ability to suck the reader in with her skillful writing. So, if you listen to this book, be aware that the story is improbable.

Historia
Some days Nora Nolan thinks that she and her husband, Charlie, lead a charmed life - except when there’s a crisis at work, a leak in the roof at home, or a problem with their twins at college. And why not? New York City was once Nora’s dream destination, and her clannish dead-end block has become a safe harbor, a tranquil village amid the urban craziness. Then one morning she returns from her run to discover that a terrible incident has shaken the neighborhood, and the fault lines begin to open: on the block, at her job, especially in her marriage.

New Yorkers 0nly
Revisado: 04-14-18
This self-absorbed tale of privileged white people may be enjoyed by that same demographic. The characters were unsympathetic, two-dimensional spoiled rich kids; the two non-white characters matched stereotypes that abound. Finally, the narrator's voice grated and she lacked the ability to give credible voice to anyone. I wished that I followed you instinct and returned it after listening to the first hour. I expected better from Quindlen!

Interminable and Tedious!
Revisado: 02-09-18
Suffice it say that I wish I had ended the tortuous tale early on. However, I kept thinking it would get better. Ultimately, I increased the speed to 1.5 just to bring it to an end. Fortunately, the narrator is talented and saved the book from absolute tedium.

Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century. The first time she found love with a Scottish warrior but had to return to the 1940s to save their unborn child. The second time she reunited with her lost love but had to leave behind the daughter that he would never see. Now Brianna, from her 1960s vantage point, has found a disturbing obituary and will risk everything in an attempt to change history.

Formulaic
Revisado: 11-28-17
An enjoyable listen but Patterson still relies heavily on formulaic writing. His portrayal of women relies upon sexual stereotypes such as the outdated idea that every female lusts after marriage. I would be willing to bet that any description of strong women were written by Maxine not James.

Historia
In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

Not. Horror Story!
Revisado: 11-05-17
Stephen and Owen King have written yet another apocalyptic novel that incorporates environmental, social, and psychological issues within the context of a catastrophic event that renders half of the world's population ineffective. The authors explore the nature of relationship between women and men, parents and children, bully and victim to name a few. They also address the issue of guns and wanton violence that might occur without the influence of women on society. The story unfolds with the requisite King style violence and bloodshed that strips away the veneer of civility. The book causes the reader to pause and contemplate our so called civilized society. Enjoyable!
