Featuring a conversation with the authors!

In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: What might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place....

The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease. Is Evie a medical anomaly to be studied? Or is she a demon who must be slain?

Set in a small Appalachian town whose primary employer is a women's prison, Sleeping Beauties is a wildly provocative, gloriously absorbing father/son collaboration between Stephen King and Owen King.

Featured Article: Stephen King’s 20 Best Audiobooks—The Definitive List

Stephen King is one of the most prolific American authors of all time. He has published 61 novels, more than 200 short stories, and six nonfiction books—and he shows no sign of stopping. His most recent novel, The Institute, was published in September of 2019, and we’ve already pre-ordered his novella anthology If It Bleeds, which is set to be released in 2020. With such a large portfolio, choosing one listen to start with can be daunting.

This book could have been so good. Nothing a man did in this story was ever good enough, I feel bad for Clint and his crazy wife who’s main gripe in the whole book was getting a dang pool she didn’t want and deemed that a good enough reason to hate her husband.

Nothing but man hating

This is a story, co-authored by a father and son team that could use some work. It's too big of a story. Too convoluted. And too confusing.

Save your credits.

So far it's great, love the fact that it is set in a women's prison, a wonderful dedication to Sandra Bland.

I preordered the book and life got hectic so I also used a token for the audio book. The beginning pretty good, the middle drug on way to long as just wasn’t very interesting, and the ending had more action but imo was very weak and felt rushed. So many things left untold and nothing about this book felt satisfying. I rarely felt a connection the massive amount of characters and struggled to remember most of their reasonings for being there in the first place...I really enjoy long stories but this one seemed to not add anything by extending entire sections filler.

I usually enjoy king’s long winded ness but this was not a book I particularly enjoyed...worth a shot if you get it free from your library.

Just really wasn’t a fun read/listen

it was a struggle but I finished it. the reader was mostly good--slightly yelly--but the story kind of sucked relative to the elder king's normal standard. there were a lot of parallels to under the dome, but there was an overall lack of tension and buildup. as a reader, I just didn't care that much.

meh

love most of his work. this one didn't click in the mind's eye like they normally do. not bad. just didn't resonate.

not for me.

This is a good performance of a well written story. True to King's style, the characters and the storyline will grip you and take you along for a long, but interesting and suspenseful journey. While the story and characters are great, the ending is a frustrating "Meh". It is almost like the Kings were being rushed by a deadline and just threw together something to wrap up, a something that was not worthy of quality of the rest of the book.

Good, Great, Meh

While the premise of the story sounded interesting, it quickly turned incredibly mediocre. And that may be generous, given what a Stephen King fan I am.

There isn’t a single character in this jumbled mess that I could relate to. I fall to sleep listening to my books, settling a bookmark and a timer. When I wake up I go back to the last thing I remember. Honestly, this was so poorly written that I actually believed the timer on my Audible app was failing. I don’t know if there were too many chefs in this kitchen with both father and son writing it, but whoever spent the most time in the kitchen needs more lessons.

Not Worthy Of One King, Much-less Two

i was waiting for the climax but it never really peaked. I love Stephen King but it didn't feel as exciting as his other novels. A little too predictable. needed more twists.

Not a thrilling king novel

I am a huge Stephen King fan, but this one was over the edge. I did not like the narrator. Every voice sounded the same. In the beginning, I had a little trouble keeping track of the characters, but I thought possibly it might get better. The underlying premise of the story is not too bad (all the women are going into cocoons when they fall asleep); the problem is in the execution. I am not sure how to characterize it: mystery, fantasy, fright, but in any event, it is not that exciting. I did not like the introduction of forest animals as characters nor did I buy into some of the premises that were designed to lead the reader through the story. At the expense of a lot of time and great effort, I managed to finish the book, hoping there would be redeeming qualities at the end, but I was wrong. I do not recommend this book, even for King fans.
