The narrator ruined it

I have listened to over 300 audiobooks. I can appreciate the difficulty of bringing beloved characters to life in a way that resonates with the book’s readers. For that reason, I am generally not picky about narrators. That being said, this (female) narration was unbearable .She sounds like a rude, 50 year old smoker trying to sound cool and it makes the female MC completely unlikable. skipping the second book thanks to the choice of narrator.

Great book but took a few tries

This was a fantastic book. Though, it took me 3 tries to get into it. There’s a lot of world building that happens and characters to keep up with but once I got into it, I couldn’t stop listening. The narrators voice took me a little to get into as well but I really like the performance overall.

I’m not sure why people think it was so spicy. There’s only two explicit scenes and they are on par with many other books in this genre. Would I give it to my teenager, no. But my best friend, absolutely!

I’m usually indifferent to narrators. I mean, I’ll have Alrxa read me a book for all I care. However, this was really bad. Alexa would have been better (and cheaper) here.

This was a good book but the narrator makes the FMC sound SUPER whiny. She’s supposed to be a tough and logical person but ends up sounding like a petulant teen over the most mundane things. It’s distracting.

A slow start…

The positives to this book are that it is an intellectually sound story telling. I was not beating my head against the wall yelling at an MC for being idiotic, illogical, or repetitive. However, I was expecting it to be more about the Fae and magical world-building. It wasn’t. It was more about the MC’s family and their relationships.

Regardless of the aforementioned and a slow start, I’m going to listen to the next book because even though it’s ant-climatic the characters are endearing and the book is well written.

I love everything about this book and as soon as I submit this review, I’m purchasing the next in this series! It’s sweet, entertaining, and has a little bit of spicy to it. I’m 100% team Alexis. She’s a great Female main character. You can’t help but love her.

The ending was meh…

Loved the book. The epilogue lost me. For those of us that stuck through all the books reading to the end, only for such a mediocre ending, I’ve got to agree with other reviews that we deserved better. Cal being resentful and Mare being stand-offish just doesn’t fit. It’s like the author snatched these feelings out of thin air right at the end opting for an attempt at profound rather than a predictable happily ever after. But after all of the back and forth, the landing didn’t stick

Sera and Ash are your next great love story…

I almost didn’t get this book because of a few negative reviews. DON’T LISTEN TO THEM. If you are a fan of the Blood & Ash series and love the world the author crafted, you will at the very least find refuge in ‘Shadow in the Ember’ to tide you over until the next B&A book release. However, it is not just a story telling that ties into the B&A series, giving you insight into that story, it is poised to be the same caliber of epic, heart-wrenching, love, imagination, and wonder, in its very own stand-alone series.

I have only one complaint which is that I immediately wanted to devour the next book but alas, must wait. This author has a way of doing this to us time and time again.

Mediocre would be putting it nicely….

This was some seriously lazy writing. If you remove all the illogical plot devices that had zero expansion, followthrough, or resolution, and all the nearly copy and paste sex scenes with the word ‘brutally’ grotesquely overused, you’d probably be left with the foundation of a decent story. The character’s are juvenile, I’m talking middle school type conversation and the relationships are poorly developed. The sex scenes will not make up for it if. There was absolutely no redemption for how excruciating this book was.

Based on the description, i thought I’d like it. Trust me, I wanted to like it. But ultimately, I listened to 24 hours of this nonsense to justify wasting a credit on it.

After a slow start, I found myself absolutely engrossed in this story. By the end of the book, I could not stop listening.

I rated it 4 out of 5 stars for performance, only because at times, the reader’s voice was so mellow that I found my mind wandering off.
