Historia
For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

Believable characters in what seemed a not so believable setting.
Revisado: 04-16-25
I liked Roger and Joe from the beginning. Quite different characters but I was drawn to them and the working relationship that they forged. The narration caught me up in the story and had me rooting for all of the good guys from the start. I didn’t know what to expect from the title so kudos to the author and narrator both for pulling me into the story deeply and quickly.

Real, well defined characters. Intriguing plots and subplots that naturally grew, ended, morphed, and felt real; not contrived. Humor, friendship, fear, sorrow, love; a great mix of emotions and actions.

This would have been so much better if read by a human.
Revisado: 06-19-24
This is the 8th book I’ve tried with virtual voice, and it will be the last. The lack of emotion is off putting and the mispronunciations drive me nuts! Hearing the word ‘read’ pronounced as ‘reed’ instead of ’red’ throws everything off. And they can’t get the virtual to recognize common abbreviations like OR, so someone is rushed to the ‘or’ instead of to the O R. Someone dials ‘nine eleven’ instead of 9 1 1. Lack of inflection and pauses in strange places throw off the meaning of a sentence and you have to rewind and listen again.
Seemed like descent stories but I’ll have to see if I can borrow paper copes from the library.

Liked how the transport happened, liked the core characters and some who were incidental after the first book. Liked Mason’s preparations; thought out, but not over the top.

Delightful stories with strong likable characters
Revisado: 06-05-24
I like the fact that each of the primary characters had a disability they were working to overcome. And that they found ways to help each other. The plots were interesting and the solutions weren’t out there’, or convoluted.
I still have trouble with the computer generated speech. In this book what bothered me most were the acronyms. Hearing the voice say something like “The me said the results were…” instead of “The ME said the results were…” Since I’m not seeing the words, I have to stop the recording and figure out what would have been said if a human were reading the text. “The eyad…” instead of “The IAD…” Hearing ‘eyad’ my mind went to Eyore, so then I was thinking of Winnie The Pooh instead of the story that was being ‘read’. It also bothers me to hear “Title Page” and things like that.
Liked the stories, but tolerated the narration.

She has a house she loves, a job she adores, and a ridiculously attractive “nemesis” who never seems to mind when she wins their favorite online game. How can life possibly get better? (It can’t, obviously. It can only get much, much worse.) Soon Dee is forced to share her adorably cozy home with her parents and estranged grandmother. Then she’s tossed into the deep end at work, tasked with cleaning up a scandal for the intimidatingly chic luxury fashion firm Celeste. If that weren’t enough, she discovers her hot nemesis works there, too.

Good plot, excellent characters, enjoyed the performance
Revisado: 06-03-24
Well defined characters; people you enjoy to varying degrees as well as people you dislike or people who frustrate you because of their actions or lack thereof. I loved Questy and the friendly competition. Real life situations, emotions, and thoughts. I wasn’t sure at first, but then I realized I was into it. Good strong female characters, as well as male characters comfortable with their feminine side which the female characters found sexy.

Not fond of computer generated voices, but great story.
Revisado: 05-21-24
While this was decent in terms of not sounding like Robbie the Robot, it still mispronounced words, dropped words and accented some in strange places.
But the story is great. I like Joanna Campbell Slan and this has a few twists. Good characters with believable interactions between them.

Nice voice and character distinction, but…
Revisado: 02-10-24
Why does no one spend time with the narrators of audio books to discuss pronunciation?
It’s not a Visa screen, like the credit card, it’s a visa screen like vision.
The job title is not “Mě dí co” it’s Medico like Medic.
I don’t blame the narrator totally, some research or confirmation would help though, but I place most of the blame on whomever is behind the book being recorded.
This gentleman has a pleasant expressive voice and does a good job of distinguishing between characters. And because of that I just went back and changed my 3 to a 4 for performance.
And I know part of my frustration is that Andre Norton is one of my favorite authors.
With that being said, it’s nice to hear these books read together since they are a series. Having grown up in the 1950’s, the first book was printed in 1954, she brings out all of the fear of that time period. In her story, the problem is Pax, the ruling body. At the time it was doing bomb drills in elementary school because the fear of the atom bomb was so great.
So the thought of escaping in desperation and starting a new life on another planet was appealing. A simpler life. Even today with all of the stress and complications in our world, it’s appealing to think of escaping to a simpler life.
I hope you enjoy this even half as much as I did.
