An interesting twisted tale
Revisado: 04-25-24
I read a few reviews before moving on to book two from one and now that I’ve finished I’m glad I wasn’t put off by some of the negative reviews I read, as they seem to have been pretty hyperbolic. While I do love Justine Erye’s narration of the first book I found this narrator to be perfectly fine and not to have an American accent as one reviewer claimed and I had zero audio issues, and the male did a fine job as well. As for the storyline I read that Fiona’s “horniness” gets in the way of the plot which I didn’t find to be the case at all. What horniness? The fact that she contemplates if a few men might actually like her or if she’s just being manipulated? So horny indeed. With the way the reviews would tell it I thought this book would have lengthy scenes of “smut” which it did not (sorry spoiler alert). It did have twist and turns and a few plot points I found to be disturbing, but if you read book one then you should be somewhat aware of what this book deals with. I did not find this book to be just one big hate on men (spoiler) especially considering everything about how it ends. Is it realistic of the hardships of being a woman in Victorian times? Yes. The only thing I’m salty about at the ending of this book is that it’s a cliff hanger so I will be looking forward to book 3.

A lot of nothing…
Revisado: 03-17-24
I was told to read this to get over the Fourth Wing slump and I’m not sure why. I’m on chapter 45 and she is just now actually trying to somewhat speak to the king and get to know him honestly this should have been chapter 15 or 20 at the latest. It’s so much nothing and just stretches of empty plot. I see that it has good reviews, but I’m not really sure why. People are reviewing that it’s reclaiming fantasy but I’m on chapter 45 and so far even that aspect has been pretty underwhelming. It’s not the worst, but it’s also so far not anywhere near what the reviews would have you believe and the main character isn’t really likable. She volunteers for the sake of her sister but then after that her personality falls pretty flat. There’s no real compelling reason to like her, and there’s not a real reason to root for any of these characters there’s no found family or anything that you are really pulling for. I will probably finish this book hopefully from chapter 45 it finally picks up, but I’ll also probably return.
*reading chapter 48* wondering how am I suppose to find this girl even remotely likable? She’s a brat. How old is she suppose to be?
*chapter 59* Starts to listen to the book at a x2 rate just to not feel like a quitter…
*chapter 69* so tired of this old trope. I really thought that with the newer genre fantasy we could leave the miscommunication blackmail trope behind…(BIG SIGH)
So it definitely got better at the end but it took a long time to get there. It’s not a bad book but it needed to be shorter. I’m not sure I have enough band width left in me to continue to the next book and I’m still not the biggest fan of Asha so there’s no motivation there.

Austen it was not.
Revisado: 02-16-23
I read a review claiming this story was better than Austen. Yeah no. Right in the middle of this book it gets weirdly “spiritual” with lots of prayer and prostrations to God. It’s as if halfway through the leading lady is like you know what I forgot I’m a hardcore Christian let me tell you all about it. Meanwhile our godly leading lady is lying to her whole family. It’s very strange and preachy.
So there’s that part the weirdly preachy part and then we have the mystery of who is our leading ladies mother and what happened to her, but it gets so muddled with the whole lame attempt at a romance plot.
I’m not sure that I will finish this book, it’s starting to get to be a struggle but there’s only 2 hours more to go. So far our romantic hero(?!?) I’m not even sure of what this man is has tried to corner and kiss the leading lady and is caressing her maid friend Nell’s face. So it’s like if Mr.Knightly really was charming Harriet while being interested in Emma. It’s very confusing. I wish the author hadn’t added this weird element into the book.
It’s not horrible but the whole beseeching God every second and Silas’ weird mixed signals are making it hard to get through. I’m not into it. Honestly if it wasn’t for liking the narrator so much I would have been done a long time ago.

My yearly go to book series
Revisado: 02-11-22
I can’t even explain how much I love the main character Kate. Unlike most main female characters of novels in this genre she’s extremely easy to like and root for, she’s sassy but not a brat and tough but still has a heart and normal emotions. This is the book that introduces Andrea Kate’s much needed female friend and also the book with one of my favorite endings. I’ve read this series probably 3 or 4 times already just waiting for Ilona and hubby to put out a new one. I know this part of the series is over but I can’t wait for more!

What in the world EJ!?
Revisado: 11-12-21
I’m 3 hours away from finishing but I’m not sure that I will be able to. This is nonsense. If you care about some light spoilers then beware…ok so Gabby our female lead so far has been comfortable with not only having her first kiss with her betrothed’s brother (and it was a passionate kiss!!! ) and then she goes on to make out with the same brother in the carriage with her chest exposed while still being betrothed to the other brother … now that she has dumped her betrothed and gotten together with his brother and they are married she is refusing to consummate their marriage because touching each other and having intercourse during the day just isn’t Christian (Insert the worlds largest eye roll here) but making out with your betrothed’s brother and letting him fondle you in the carriage is?!? Yeah the plot is extremely unbelievable.. if Gabby was some pious Christian maiden from the get ho then maybe this would make sense but she wasn’t so now it just feels like the author is insulting our intelligence by trying to make drama for interest where in reality there most likely wouldn’t be any. I’ve read the other two books in this series and they weren’t my favorite but since I started I decided to just get through the rest … but life is too short to read nonsense. This was my first foray into reading an EJ book series and I’m thinking it will be the last. The overall plot of the stories aren’t necessarily bad it’s just all of the stupid nonsensical drama in between that dumbs them down.

Listened to this one despite the negative reviews
Revisado: 10-14-21
And I was pleasantly surprised. This book was light hearted and easy to listen. Like most regency romance novels it had some over the top parts of the hero swooping in to save the day, but that is actually the fun of reading these novels.
Someone in the reviews said it was a Pride and Prejudice knock off. Which makes me think they have never actually read Pride and Prejudice. While the female lead does enjoy Jane Austen that’s about as Austen as this book gets.
Other reviewers said rated it low for having sexual content…. Well If you are a prude or looking for a Christian romance is this the book for you? No. This book does not have enough sexual content to put it quite in the category of erotica, but it also does NOT shy away from sexual situations or adult language either. So if those things bug you maybe don’t read about a wicked Viscount and look for the one about the Pure and Holy viscount instead.
Another things that I noticed in the reviews before I decided to read was that people complained about the narrator. Honestly I thought she did quite well. I listen to audio often and there are some things that make a narrator less enjoyable.
This narrator had a voice that was
•age appropriate for the leading lady
•she was able to do a decent male voice that that wasn’t high pitched or over the top
•she had a British accent and it was not one that was over the top or so full of lispy pronunciations it was hard to understand
•she did not read with a monotone and her reading was conversational with the appropriate fluctuations
The only thing I can say that would be someone what negative about this book is that the outcome seemed unrealistic. It’s something you would fantasize about happening in your head, but would be very unlikely to actually happen in reality. But it’s a regency romance novel and it’s fiction so that’s actually pretty ok.
In conclusion if you aren’t out off by some sex, and you aren’t looking for a book where they find the lord in the end… but you are looking for something that has romance and friendship that’s a feel good easy to listen to novel that doesn’t get too dark and is a part of a series I suggest this. Fans of Lisa Klypas’ Wallflower Series should enjoy these books. Hope that helps!

After reading other reviews before you read this know..
Revisado: 10-02-21
In the actual book description it mentions that this book is for 18+ so if sexual situations and adult language like the F word are too much for you then this book probably is not a good option. I felt irritated trying to read reviews on what other people thought of this book only to see them give bad reviews for something they were clearly warned about before hand.
Second for people who complained that they didn’t get all the answers blah blah this book is not a stand alone it’s apart of a series so no you will not get all the answers in one book you have to wait.
Third people are complaining in reviews about the female lead being too immature well she is only 22 years old still in college so yes she is allowed to still act young because that is still pretty young and if you are a virgin and 22 no you are not too old to care so those aspects of the book were actually pretty realistic to me being a young woman myself.
Other people complained about the female lead being too bratty to be likable, I read and listen to a lot of books in this genre and I. Just don’t agree. She has an attitude that’s rough around the edges but it’s because she’s had a hard life, what makes her rough around the edge personality likable though is the fact that she’s able to see damaged souls like herself and have compassion for them. At the end of the day she’s not just looking out for herself she truly cares about others and that’s her redeeming factor.
The reviews on this book were so extreme that I felt like I had to add those counterpoints to my own.
What I liked about the book is that it’s extremely imaginative. I love that it doesn’t just fully take place on earth and that our main character discovers a whole new realm with different portals and beings.
I love the friends that’s she’s able to make along her journey who are closer to family.
I love that even though this book may have sexual mature elements that’s not the whole plot, because there is an actual plot and a bit of a mystery that’s needs some unraveling.
I will definitely be downloading the next book. I think if you are a fan of the series by Karen Marie Moning Dark Fever then you will probably like this book it has similar vibes without as much sexual content.
