Historia
Raging ambition. Towering egos. Competition under a veneer of courtesy. Heroic effort combined with plagiarism, theft, exaggeration, and fraud. This was the state of bird study in eastern North America during the early 1800s, as a handful of intrepid men raced to find the last few birds that were still unknown to science. The most famous name in the bird world was John James Audubon, who painted spectacular portraits of birds. But although his images were beautiful, creating art was not his main goal. Instead, he aimed to illustrate (and write about) as many different species as possible.

I will undoubtedly read this/ listen to this again, but there are portions of it that seem unnecessarily scattered. Still a 5/5. I enjoy the intertwining of personal stories and the history.
There is a good amount of political discussion and presentism that some may disagree with, but the author addresses it well and I think those interested in the argument will find this a valuable resource. Great job Mr. Kaufman!

Historia
Much has been written about Palmyra, the Sacred Grove and the Hill Cumorah in the early years of the Church. But what became of those historic sites after the Prophet Joseph Smith and his family left their small farm in upstate New York? The properties fell into the hands of non-Mormons who became increasingly more prejudiced and belligerent in their hatred towards the Church and its followers. The Saints were driven out of their New York home in 1831. It wasn't until June 10, 1907, that Apostle George Albert Smith was able to purchase the farm for the sum of $16,000. Seven years later, he ...

A great story...but
Revisado: 04-13-24
The stories are classics in the Mormon History world, but the book jumps all over the place and could've been better organized.
The performance is also lacking in many areas. It did well in general, but my number one issue was the incorrect pronunciation of the name Bean.
Overall I enjoyed listening to the stories and would recommend it to all who have interest in the man, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the history of said Church, and the areas surrounding its history.

In a radical reinterpretation of the 19th century West, George Black casts Yellowstone's creation as the culmination of three interwoven strands of history.

Martha Carrier is my great-something Grandmother. She was killed in the Salem trials. The insanity of dream, the insanity of judgmental fear is put across forcefully in this short, painfully accurate story.

Historia
Newbery Award-winner Gary Paulsen's best-known book comes to audio in this breathless, heart-gripping drama about a boy pitted against the wilderness with only a hatchet and a will to live. On his way to visit his recently divorced father in the Canadian mountains, thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is the only survivor when the single-engine plane crashes. His body battered, his clothes in shreds, Brian must now stay alive in the boundless Canadian wilderness.

Still One of the Best
Revisado: 01-16-24
From the first time I read it in elementary school until now this book has been one of my favorites. Paulsen's story is at once adventurous while also contemplative. This coming of age story is quite heavy at times, addressing divorce, suicide, and infidelity, but it is dealt with in a serious manner, but from the standpoint of boy growing into a young man. I can't wait to share it with my boys.

Historia
Published in 2008, Massacre at Mountain Meadows was a bombshell of a book, revealing the story of one of the grimmest episodes in Latter-day Saint history, when settlers in southwestern Utah slaughtered more than 100 members of a California-bound wagon train in 1857. In this much-anticipated sequel, Richard E. Turley Jr. and Barbara Jones Brown examine the aftermath of this atrocity. Vengeance Is Mine documents southern Utah leaders’ attempts to cover up their crime by silencing witnesses and spreading lies.

Revisado: 08-08-23
The authors have done a great job keeping the information flowing in an interesting way while not sensationalizing it. The text is a 5.5 out of 5. My only critique is with the reader. There are some places where names are wrong, such as Wilford Woodruff being called William Woodruff, etc. Ivwill definitely be listening to it again!

Historia
These 36 lectures tell the remarkable story of a tumultuous thousand-year period in the history of England. Dominated by war, conquest, and the struggle to balance the stability brought by royal power with the rights of the governed, it was a period that put into place the foundation of much of the world we know today. As you journey through this largely chronological narrative you'll see key themes emerge, including the assimilation of successive waves of invaders, the tense relationship between kings and the nobility, and the constant battles over money and taxation.

Libraries are much more than mere collections of volumes. The best are magical, fabled places whose fame has become part of the cultural wealth they are designed to preserve. The Library is a celebration of books as objects, a celebration of the anthropology and physicality of books and bookish space, and an account of the human side of these hallowed spaces by a leading and passionate bibliophile.

If the history of libraries and books is exciting to you this book has a great deal to offer. I've thoroughly enjoyed it! I would compare it to Nicholas Basbane's works, Basbanes is slightly better at continuity, but both share great stories.

Historia
The Unpublishable Memoirs is not a personal memoir, but a collection of mystery stories by Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach (1876-1952) a famous American collector and seller of rare books and manuscripts. At Sotheby's in London, Rosenbach was known as "The Terror of the Auction Room" and in Paris, he was called “The Napoleon of Books”. The protagonist of these “memoirs" is Robert Hooker, a sly and unscrupulous bibliophile who cons the wealthy out of their rare books and manuscripts.
