Historia
There have been many Marines. There have been many marksmen. But there has been only one Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, a legend of Marine lore. He stalked the Viet Cong behind enemy lines. His record has never been matched: 93 confirmed kills. This is his story. Powerful, chilling, and all true.

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-02-25
I have read many books on Vietnam. Most are sensitively written or fact filled with little details about personalities. However, this is not one of these. I was disappointed to find this story that sounded like a fun experience at Boy Scout camp. Little empathy was shown to the victims or citizens of the country.

Historia
John Launer served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. All Expenses Paid 2.0 summarizes All Expenses Paid as how to become a Combat Infantryman, then continues with the second half of his military experience. It covers the human aspect of the war, through the Winning Hearts and Minds program; spending time with the South Vietnamese people, especially the children; his R&R to Sydney, Australia; and finally returning home. Launer also documents the lasting physical and psychological effects on himself and all veterans who served there. Containing a glossary of military ...

The story was excellent, however the narration with virtual voice just about ruined it. The voice was monotone, and almost put me to sleep.

Historia
"Kids like me didn't go to Vietnam", writes Jack McLean in his must-listen memoir. Raised in suburban New Jersey, he attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, but decided to put college on hold. After graduation in the spring of 1966, faced with the mandatory military draft, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for a two-year stint. "Vietnam at the time was a country, and not yet a war", he writes. It didn't remain that way for long.

Well written
Revisado: 10-25-24
This is the most engaging story of the Vietnam experience that I’ve read. It gives a different view from most that I’ve read as it deals with social class.

Horrible narration

The monotone AI takes away from the drama of the story. No emotional expression and mispronunciation makes the story boring.

It would have been much better if the narration was a bit more lively. Monotone presentation was annoying and words were mispronounced.

Historia
John Launer, a United States Army Combat Infantryman in the Vietnam War, details his horrific experiences during that time. Setting the record straight that soldiers were not drug addicts, murderers, and baby killers, Launer documents that American media bias led to the public misunderstanding of the war. The action within is violent, bloody, and never ending, leading many veterans to devastating physical and psychological trauma upon their return home to the USA.

Great book but terrible narration
Revisado: 05-22-24
This is the best account of the Vietnam experience that I have read. It is particularly good because it traces the writer’s opinions and how they change as he goes through his tour. In particular the anti war movement and the criticism of the government is not common in the biographies and autobiographies I have read. However the AI narration was monocratic and devoid of emotion — mis- pronunciations - it would have 5 stars had it not been for the narration.

Historia
My little girl’s room is dark. Her bed is empty. I turn on her unicorn nightlight and bury my face in her pillow, my heart breaking. I know who did this. His name is Samuel Barlow. He has pale sallow skin and red-rimmed icy-blue eyes. But no one will listen. As darkness falls and rain lashes against the window, there’s a knock at my door and I open it to see those same eyes staring back at me. It’s his mother and she says she can help me find my daughter.

Twists and turns
Revisado: 05-18-24
The story was a good one. However, after having read several of K. L. Slater’s books, I was able to discern the final plot twist early on. Negatively, the reader’s voice and interpretation was annoying to me.

Historia
Que Son Valley is actually a large area of hills and valleys just to the west of Da Nang, Viet Nam. During the 1960s, units from the US Marines and US Army engaged the 2nd North Vietnamese Division in heavy and close combat. Our mission was to keep the enemy from capturing the cities of Da Nang, Tam Ky, and Chu Lai and to pacify the area. We did prevent the enemy from capturing these vital cities, but the area was far from pacified.

Honesty
Revisado: 05-02-24
I’ve read many books on personal stories of the war. This is one of the best because the author looks at different points of view and admits his change of perspective on the validity of the war. It is important to recognize our failures as well as our triumphs, and this introspective experience captures the evolution of the 1960’s experience.

Historia
In fall 1965, North Vietnam's high command smelled blood in the water. The South Vietnamese republic was on the verge of collapse, and Hanoi resolved to crush it once and for all. The communists set their sights on South Vietnam's strategically vital West-Central Highlands. Their first target was the American Special Forces camp at Plei Me, remote and isolated along the Cambodian border.

Forest for the trees
Revisado: 04-26-24
Although I am intensively interested in the 1960’s and the Vietnam war, this book was difficult to follow. Instead of focusing on the big picture the author included so many details and names of combatants, although well deserved credit, made listening to the book complicated and confusing. This one would have been better read rather than listened to.
